Tems’ single “What You Need”, released in November 2025 as the emotional centrepiece of her third EP ‘Love Is a Kingdom’, has just surged 33 spots to a new peak of No. 56 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in only its fourth week on the chart.

The track, produced by Tems herself alongside long-time collaborator GuiltyBeatz, debuted at No. 93 back in mid-February after a Colors performance lit the fuse. It has since become the highest-gainer on the chart this week, fuelled by a potent mix of rising streams, radio airplay pickup, and genuine word-of-mouth momentum. The recent chart surge also follows a stretch of high visibility. For an artist who has never chased the obvious pop playbook, this steady ascent reaffirms the quiet referendum that authentic songcraft and cultural resonance still matter.

“What You Need” is a stripped-down, almost confessional epilogue to a dying relationship—“Your love is not my lifeline, your love is not my home”—delivered in that unmistakable Tems timbre: smoky, wounded, and impossibly intimate. The production is sparse yet expansive, letting her voice carry the weight.

The timing of the surge is no coincidence either. Tems delivered a breathtaking, curtain-backed performance of the song on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ at the end of March, proving once again that her live presence is every bit as commanding as her studio work. Fresh off her Coachella appearance alongside Justin Bieber and Wizkid, the Lagos-born star is reminding the industry that visibility without substance is temporary, but substance with visibility is unstoppable.

This milestone arrives at a pivotal moment in Tems’ already remarkable trajectory. With “What You Need” marking her seventh Hot 100 entry—and her second solo entry—she became the first African female artist to reach that number, tying her with Burna Boy for the most entries by any African act.

Her résumé already reads like a blueprint for global dominance: the culture-shifting feature on Wizkid’s “Essence” (which cracked the top 10 with Justin Bieber’s remix), her Grammy-winning turn on Future’s “Wait For U” alongside Drake, two Grammy wins total (including Best African Music Performance for “Love Me JeJe”), and contributions to the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack with “No Woman No Cry”.
At No. 56, “What You Need” becomes one of her strongest solo chart showings yet and another marker in a catalogue that continues to expand the possibilities of African music on a global scale. Not by shifting toward the mainstream, but by letting the mainstream meet her where she already stands.

Adekunle Gold is reopening the world of ‘Fuji‘ as an expansion. The singer has announced ‘Fuji Xtra’ (Deluxe), a five-track extension of his October 2025 sixth studio album, scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. The new edition brings in a carefully selected cast — TML Vibez, Simi, and Olamide — with “Formation”, his collaboration with Olamide, leading the rollout. It’s a strategic first step: a record that leans into rhythm, identity, and cadence, while subtly pointing back to the sonic philosophy that shaped the original project.

When ‘Fuji’ arrived in late 2025, it didn’t present itself as a sharp pivot. It felt more like a deliberate reorientation toward roots that had always been present in Adekunle Gold’s music but never quite this pronounced. Drawing from the percussive intensity and call-and-response structure of traditional “Fuji” music, the album folded these elements into a modern Afropop framework, creating something that felt both archival and forward-facing, showcasing ownership of sound, of language and of cultural memory.

Across the album, he explored themes of self-definition, legacy, and emotional clarity, occasionally stripping things back to let his songwriting breathe. At the same time, the project carried moments of lift and grooves that opened up the body – a balance that serves as its core strength.

‘Fuji Xtra’ (Deluxe) enters as a continuation of that conversation. The addition of Simi suggests a return to one of his most trusted musical counterparts, while TML Vibez introduces a younger, more current energy into the mix. Olamide’s presence on “Formation” ties the project back to a lineage of street-rooted expression and Yoruba musical tradition.

There’s also something telling about the timing. Deluxe releases often function as afterthoughts or commercial add-ons, but this one reads differently. It feels intentional, as though there were ideas that didn’t fit into the first frame but now are given space to exist without compromise. If “Fuji” placed Adekunle Gold firmly within a lineage he has long circled, then ‘Fuji Xtra’ will push deeper into it, with a wider lens and a clearer sense of direction.

New Music Friday rarely waits for you to catch up. This week feels like that in real time: collaborations that look big on paper, records that lean on feeling more than ambition, and a few artists testing how far they can stretch without losing balance. There’s a lot to sit with, but not everything insists on your attention. Some songs grow into you, some pass through, and a few leave you wondering if they could’ve been more.

“Doucement” – Fally Ipupa ft Joé Dwèt Filé

“Doucement” is the new single from Fally Ipupa featuring Joé Dwèt Filé, dropped today as a lead-in to Fally’s upcoming album XX. It’s track 7 on the project and marks a clear cross-cultural pairing: Congolese rumba king meets one of Haiti’s biggest current kompa/gouyad voices.

Built on a softened, mid-tempo groove, “Doucement” leans into the kind of restrained sensuality that has long defined Fally’s work. The track opens with a mid-tempo groove that’s unmistakably rooted in classic Congolese rumba—those rolling, melodic guitar lines (seben-style undertones) and Fally Ipupa’s signature smooth, slightly nasal Lingala/French delivery. He comes in confident and romantic right away: calling the woman “Queen du Congo,” saying he’s waited his whole life for someone like her, promising protection in a “matata” world, and suggesting they take it slow (“faisons doucement”). The hook repeats the idea of exclusive, after-midnight connection with simple, repetitive phrasing that sticks: “Eza kaka yo moko… bolingo oyo ekozala ya solo.”

Joé Dwèt Filé jumps in on the second verse and brings the Haitian flavor. His part shifts the imagery to beaches in Haiti, “diri djondjon and mikatés” (nodding to Haitian food/culture), ocean eyes, and a blend of the two worlds. His voice has that lighter, more R&B-inflected kompa croon, which is less gritty than pure traditional compas but very accessible and melodic. The chemistry works because both guys are singing in a similar romantic lane.

The production is clean and unintrusive: light percussion, a steady bounce, and enough melodic space for the vocals and guitars to breathe without competing for attention.

The “juste une fois” bridge and repeated “donne-moi un peu, un peu” pleas lean into teasing sensuality without going explicit. It’s polished, modern rumba with a kompa/R&B seasoning rather than a forced fusion banger.

“More To Life” EP by 17 aka Alex Iwobi, arrived yesterday as his debut 9-track project. It’s short at about 23-24 minutes, featureing a handful of mostly rising Nigerian/UK Afrobeats and street-pop voices Fido, 24AM/Amadou Onana, Giddi, Teniola Time, SPKS, P17, and carries the theme of growth, freedom, and stepping outside the footballer box. Alex Iwobi records under “17”, his longtime jersey number, and this feels like a personal side project and a creative pivot.

Production stays firmly in the current Afrobeats/street-pop lane: mid-tempo beats, log drums, soft synths, light guitar or piano touches, and clean mixes that prioritize vibe over aggression.

Delivery is clear, relaxed, and conversational. With storytelling that balances fame/football pressure with personal freedom, enjoying success, relationships, and self-reflection. Track 0: Opens with a freestyle energy. Alex Iwobi sounds most confident here — loose, rhythmic, setting the “this is me outside the pitch” tone. Short and direct. Mine (ft. 24AM): smooth collab with his former teammate sees decent chemistry and a melodic hook. Feels like a relaxed flex track. Bussdown E (ft. Teniola Time, 4AM & Giddi): More crowded, tries to add energy with multiple voices. Joanna E (ft. Fido): One of the stronger cuts. Fido brings his melodic touch with a hook that is catchy. Proper (Freestyle) (ft. P17 & SPKS) and the following cluster (Double Double, By My Side, Joga Bonito): These blend into each other. More rap-leaning moments with the features handling verses. “Joga Bonito” nods to his football roots with a light, playful feel. Closer Letter: Feels like the intended emotional endpoint; it is reflective, slower, and more personal. It’s quiet and ends the project on a thoughtful note.

‘More To Life’ is a respectable, low-risk debut from a footballer dipping seriously into music. It is a genuine passion project that delivers exactly the smooth, reflective, success-and-freedom theme the title promises.

It’s a decent 23-minute escape that says “there’s life beyond the pitch”. The first thing that stands out about ‘More To Life’ is the context. 17 is still primarily known as a footballer, and that reality hangs over the entire listen. This is a transition attempt, and on first listen, you can hear the curiosity that comes with that. The 9-track project moves between Afrobeats and Afrowave textures, leaning on familiar, mid-tempo production.

There’s a noticeable reliance on collaborators—Fido, 24AM, Giddi, SPKS—who help carry different moments across the tape. On songs like “Joanna” or “Bussdown,” that support is useful; it fills in gaps where 17’s delivery still feels tentative.

Lyrically, the EP circles around growth, freedom, and life beyond expectations—themes that clearly mirror his real-life position balancing football and music. The intention is clear. There are moments where the writing feels honest and direct but occasionally slips into generic phrasing that doesn’t leave much behind after the track ends. What works in the EP’s favour is its listenability. It’s easy to play through with a sequencing that is smooth and doesn’t drag. Each track sits comfortably next to the other, which makes it feel cohesive.

This EP feels like groundwork. You can hear the interest, the access, and the willingness to explore coupled with a reasonable urgency that makes a debut stick.

“Dance 4 Jesus”- Fido, Zlatan, ODUMODUBLVCK

There’s an obvious idea at the centre of “Dance For Jesus”, and the song doesn’t try to hide it or dress it up. It’s right there in the title, and everything else is built around that: energy first, meaning second. “Dance 4 Jesus” is Fido’s first single of 2026 e featuring Zlatan and ODUMODUBLVCK, released as a high-energy street-hop/Afrobeats cut, mixing club-ready percussion with a loose dance concept.

The track jumps straight into a bouncy, mid-to-uptempo groove built on rolling Afrobeat drums, sharp percussive hits, light trap-leaning bass, and layered claps that keep it moving without getting too dense. Production feels current and functional with enough low-end and snap to hit on speakers.

Fido leads with the main hook and verses, delivering in his melodic street style. The chorus revolves around repetitive, chant-like lines: “you go shake body… make you dance for Jesus… you must shake body jerk… I go spray money… you go wine for Jesus.” It’s simple, catchy, and built for sing-alongs.

Zlatan comes in with his signature bouncy flow, ad-libs, and street swagger, adding hype and that familiar gritty flavor that makes his parts instantly recognizable and fun. ODUMODUBLVCK brings an equally gritty, commanding edge with his raw delivery and intensity, giving the track a harder street-hop contrast without derailing the dance vibe. The three complement each other: Fido holds the melodic center, Zlatan adds weight, and Odumodublck lifts the bounce.

Fido’s “Dance For Jesus” is immediately danceable. The hook sticks after one or two listens, and the beat encourages movement. It is straightforward, functional party/street energy, with Fido setting the tone and a hook that leans heavily on chant structure. It’s repetitive, easy to latch onto, and clearly designed for crowd response. The production follows that same logic: hard drums, minimal distractions, and a bounce that doesn’t let up. It’s less about musical layering and more about impact.

The interesting part is how the song handles its “gospel” angle. It’s not reflective or spiritual in the traditional sense; the record frames devotion as celebration, almost like turning a street anthem into a praise session. That blend—faith language over street-hop structure—is what gives the song its identity.

“Colorado” is the new single from Johnny Drille featuring Ayra Starr and Young Jonn. Produced by TeeMode with Young Jonn involved in the polished finish, it’s a mid-tempo Afro-fusion/R&B track that mixes soulful melodies, soft instrumentals, warm chords, and a relaxed groove.

The song opens with Johnny Drille’s layered “no, no, no” ad-libs leading into a pre-chorus where he sounds vulnerable and questioning: “Suddenly, my loving no come dey dey enough / Tell me wetin I do, odo? / Ṣe you get another someone?” The production stays understated with gentle percussion, subtle keys, light Afrobeat swing without heavy log drums or aggressive drops. It’s clean, warm, and designed for laidback listening.

The chorus, led by Ayra Starr with Johnny Drille harmonising, is the hookiest part: “You know nobody perfect, oh / No be by who drive Benz, oh / It’s how you got me high like Colorado / High me like Colos.” It uses the “Colorado” metaphor for getting euphorically high on love (or the relationship high), plus playful lines like “Ruler for my math-set” and “Never play you Nintendo.” Ayra Starr’s delivery here is bright, melodic, and effortless. Her tone cuts through nicely and gives the track its lift.

Young Jonn comes in, his verse smooth and melodic: “Pass me your love, oh / Slay, slay, pass me your love”—adding a bit of street-flavoured plea while keeping the romantic insecurity theme going (“you show me say my love is not enough”). Johnny Drille handles a second verse with more emotional depth: “My heart is pacing… All your flaws cannot blur my view / Do masa-masa, fight me, kung fu / Still, I’m reserving table for two.” The bridge blends their voices with lines about being “all for you” and missing the groove.

Johnny Drille’s ‘Colorado’ rides a consistent, laid-back wave with layered vocals and harmonies filling the space. The outro fades on reflective ad-libs about things happening and “save your head, don’t fall in love” mixed with gratitude.

Johnny Drille anchors it with his signature heartfelt, slightly acoustic-leaning emotional delivery. Ayra Starr adds sparkle and catchiness, and Young Jonn slots in cleanly for melodic contrast, making a competent, pleasant grown-and-sexy Afrobeats/R&B record.

“Colorado” looks like an easy win—Johnny Drille bringing his controlled, soft-edged style into the same room as Ayra Starr and Young Jonn. Three different energies, three different audiences. But on first listen, the song is less about collision and more about compromise.

The production sits in a safe middle. It blends Afropop with light R&B elements—warm, easy, and intentionally unchallenging. It’s the kind of beat that leaves space for vocals to carry heavily, which fits Johnny Drille’s strengths. He opens the record in a familiar tone: calm, slightly pleading, and melodic without trying to stretch range or tempo. The theme is straightforward—love, uncertainty, and the need for reassurance. There’s a recurring idea of not being enough, of trying to hold on while something slips.

Ayra Starr comes in with a lift in tone. Her voice adds brightness and movement, giving the song a bit more texture, but she stays within the same emotional lane. Young Jonn plays the glue role. His contribution leans into rhythm and catchiness, helping the record stay engaging without shifting its structure. He doesn’t disrupt the softness of the song; he smooths it out further. Again, it works, keeping everything in a controlled range.

“MINK SB” (Make I No Kill Somebody) – Jae5, Skepta, Lojay, Skillibeng

JAE5’s “MINK SB” (Make I No Kill Somebody) featuring Skepta, Lojay, and Skillibeng sees a lineup that pulls from varying roots for a deliberate global Afrobeats/UK rap/dancehall fusion.

The track opens with a y and an overall restrained production — rolling Afro-percussion, subtle bass, light synth or guitar touches, and space that lets the voices sit upfront. JAE5’s signature style keeps things smooth and commanding without big builds. It rides one consistent wave with a laid-back summer-ready energy.

‘MINK SB’ leans into lifestyle, confidence, flex, and global influence. Typical braggadocio with international flavour, money talk, and cool detachment. The production is minimal but effective — infectious enough to nod your head, smooth enough for playlists or drives. It sounds expensive and polished without clutter.

The sound sits comfortably in 2026 Afro-fusion territory with a minimal beat that keeps it cool and vibey. It delivers exactly what the stacked lineup promised — a smooth fusion with each artist shining in their lane.

Skepta opens the track with sharp, confident rap verses — his flow is unmistakable, dry and authoritative, adding that gritty London edge and personality. Lojay handles a prominent melodic hook and silky vocal parts that give the track its accessible, singable centre. His tone adds warmth and depth as Skillibeng drops the dancehall flavor with his gritty, rhythmic delivery and ad-libs that inject bounce and menace. The order and chemistry feel natural: Lojay carries the melody, Skepta grounds it in rap confidence, and Skillibeng spices it with Jamaican energy, complementing each other in a four-way pass-around.

With a lineup like this, “MINK SB” already comes with expectations, but JAE5 sublimely curates a space where different scenes meet. The production is the anchor. It’s stripped back but intentional—light bounce, clean percussion, and a groove that sits somewhere between laid-back and assertive. That’s typical of JAE5’s style: he creates room and lets the artists define the movement. Here, that works. The song feels controlled from the start.

Skepta steps in with the most defined presence. His delivery is sharp, measured, and confident in a way that immediately stabilizes the record, making the beat adapts to him. That contrast gives the song its first real edge.

Lojay’s vocals bring melody and texture, but more importantly, they make the record easy to sit with. He doesn’t push the song forward; he smooths it out. It’s effective, but it also lowers the tension that Skepta introduces.

Skillibeng comes in with a dancehall inflection that adds variety, but like the others, he doesn’t try to dominate the record, rather, he fits into the structure.

That’s really what defines “MINK SB.” It’s cohesive, almost to a fault. “MINK SB” feels like a well-executed link-up; smooth, global, and easy to replay, especially in low-pressure settings.

Since signing to the YBNL family in 2015, it’s somewhat surprising that Adekunle Gold—who notably designed the label’s logo—never released a record with the label’s frontman, Olamide, during his two-year stint or in the years that followed. That absence makes the arrival of “Formation” on April 9 feel like a long-delayed alignment, one that quietly closes a gap in both artists’ shared history.

The release comes on the heels of his October 2025 ‘Fuji‘ album, named after the Fuji genre, a Yoruba dance sound deeply rooted in Islamic-influenced delivery and traditional percussion. Announcing the record via his social media pages, Adekunle Gold emphasised that “Formation” is their “first ever” collaboration—a detail that still leaves many wondering why it took this long and why now. However, with “Formation”, the collaboration arrives at a time when both artists occupy a similar creative space, one that naturally aligns with Olamide’s long-standing flirtation with Fuji influences.

Produced by Chillz, “Formation” continues the sonic thread of Adekunle Gold’s Fuji album, which explains its inclusion as part of a pack release alongside select tracks from the project. The record leans fully into that world, carrying a delivery that suggests not just influence but studied familiarity with the genre. It opens on a percussive groove and a pacy cadence, with both artists referencing “electro fuji” within the song—an indication of how they frame the record itself. Adekunle Gold’s delivery is smooth and measured, though a slightly huskier texture might have added more weight to its Fuji leanings. Olamide, however, steps in with a verse that supplies that missing grit, reinforcing the record’s foundation and sharpening its identity.

“Formation” sits comfortably within the growing pocket of neo-Fuji—a space where pop sensibilities are woven into traditional structures, reshaping a decades-old sound into something more contemporary. It’s a feel-good record, but one that remains conscious of its roots, as both artists push at the edges of heritage while still moving like students of it.

What makes “Formation” resonate is the collaboration and the timing of it. After years of parallel evolution, Adekunle Gold and Olamide meet at a point where their artistic languages overlap more naturally than ever. The record builds on history, subtly reinforcing their roles as both interpreters and preservers of a sound that continues to stretch beyond its origins.

Just days after its April 3, 2026 release, Nigerian Afrobeats star Omah Lay’s sophomore album ‘Clarity of Mind’ has stormed to the top of Spotify’s Top Albums Debut Global chart. It’s a landmark moment that underscores the artist’s evolution from viral sensation to one of the genre’s most consistent global forces.

The 12-track project — featuring a lone guest appearance from Elmah on the standout “Coping Mechanism” — opened with a commanding 4.86 million streams on Spotify in its first full day worldwide. In Nigeria alone, it pulled 3.38 million streams, landing among the platform’s biggest album debuts of all time. Four tracks from the album simultaneously dominated Spotify’s Top Songs Debut Global chart, with lead single “Artificial Happiness” leading the charge alongside “I Am”, “Coping Mechanism”, and others climbing fast.

The dominance doesn’t stop at Spotify. On Apple Music, ‘Clarity of Mind’ not only claimed the No. 1 album spot in Nigeria but also topped charts in 91 countries and hit No. 1 in 13 African nations (Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Cameroon, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia, and Benin). In Nigeria’s Top 100 Songs chart, eight of the top ten positions belonged to album tracks on day one, a rare feat that highlights the project’s immediate cultural stranglehold.

A Four-Year Wait Worth Every Second

Following the 2022 success of his debut Boy Alone, Omah Lay took his time. He scrapped entire recording sessions after a trusted collaborator leaked and repurposed one of his unreleased records, then stepped back to focus on healing, family, and self-growth. In interviews, he described the new album as the sonic result of that clarity: “I’ve just been inside doing all this healing, all this self-growth… this is clarity of mind.”

Sonically, the project doubles down on what fans call his signature “purple sound” — a moody, mid-tempo blend of melancholic Afrobeats, electronic textures, and raw vulnerability. Producer Tempoe anchored much of the sound, giving the record a cohesive, introspective feel that rewards repeated listens. Tracks like “Artificial Happiness”, “Don’t Love Me”, “Jah Jah Knows”, “Canada Breeze”, “Water Spirit”, and “Waist” have emerged as instant fan favourites, blending emotional honesty with feel-good grooves.

From early breakthroughs like “Lo Lo” to global smashes such as “Soso” and his recent Grammy-nominated collaboration “With You” with Davido, he has built a career on quiet intensity and artistic integrity. This album arrives with pre-release singles already surpassing 227 million Spotify streams and marks his biggest single-day streaming total ever across his entire catalogue.

In a recent interview, Omah Lay didn’t shy away from declaring his place in Afrobeats history: “I don’t want to brag too much, but I am the best at this… When it comes to art, like making music, I am the best of the last 20 years.” He singled out only Burna Boy as a peer in true artistry.

The chart-topping debut of ‘Clarity of Mind’ is validation and proof. After years of patient crafting, Omah Lay has turned personal reflection into a mainstream victory. As the numbers keep climbing, it is clear that Omah Lay is operating at a level few in the genre can match. ‘Clarity of Mind’ is the sound of an artist who found himself and brought the world along for the ride.

Davido is set to make his long-awaited debut at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival 2026, a booking that places one of Afrobeats’ most commercially dominant figures on one of the world’s most visible stages. Davido will take the stage on both Saturdays of the 2026 edition, April 11 and April 18, at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, becoming the only Nigerian artist and the sole dedicated Afrobeats representative on this year’s global lineup. Davido appears as part of a stacked global lineup headlined by Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G.

This milestone marks a significant leap for Davido and the entire Afrobeats movement. Fresh off his high-energy 5IVE Alive Tour across North America, the 33-year-old hitmaker is set to bring his signature blend of infectious rhythms, anthemic choruses, and electrifying stage presence to the desert. For an artist whose international run has steadily translated from streaming dominance to sold-out arenas, Coachella represents both a symbolic and strategic checkpoint, continuously serving as a cultural placement within a festival that has historically dictated global pop visibility.

Davido’s inclusion also continues a broader shift in how African music is absorbed into global circuits. Where Afrobeats once occupied novelty slots, it now commands consistent presence, with artists entering lineups not as outliers but as essential contributors to the festival’s sonic diversity. Years after a previously anticipated Coachella appearance failed to materialize, Davido arrives at a time when both his catalogue and the genre he represents carry undeniable global weight. The stage is no longer a breakthrough moment; it’s a reflection of a status already earned.

With the festival weekends fast approaching (April 10–12 and 17–19, 2026), all eyes will be on the desert to see whether Davido delivers the kind of unforgettable, high-octane set that could further cement Afrobeats as a dominant force in global pop culture.

It’s New Music Friday, April 3, 2026, and the West African soundscape just hit the refresh button with a perfect storm of vulnerability, swagger, and unfiltered groove. Leading the charge is Omah Lay’s long-awaited sophomore album ‘Clarity of Mind’, a 12-track deep dive into smoky introspection where the Port Harcourt poet confronts artificial highs, sacred temptations, and hard-won self-awareness four years after ‘Boy Alone’. But the day refuses to stay in one lane: Ghana’s melodic charm collides with Nigerian street energy through Camidoh’s playful flirtation on ‘Phony’, Mavo’s tender ‘Shy Lover’, Pappy Kojo & Kuami Eugene’s cozy domestic bop ‘Roomie’, and the explosive remix energy of Straffitti, Zlatan & Scottyolorin turning up the heat on ‘TE WO II’. From late-night reckonings to waist-whining anthems and roomie-to-forever fantasies, today’s drops paint a full spectrum of love, lust, money, and quiet clarit, all wrapped in the warm, percussive heartbeat that keeps Afrobeats pulsing across borders. Buckle up, press play, and let the discourse begin.

Omah Lay – Clarity of Mind

One of the most anticipated Afrobeats projects in recent years has finally landed. Four years after his breakout debut ‘Boy Alone’ (2022), which topped charts in Nigeria, scored a Justin Bieber collab, and helped fuel a Grammy nod via Davido’s “With You”, Omah Lay (Stanley Omah Didia) returns with his ‘Clarity of Mind’. The 12-track, 33-minute sophomore album follows massive pre-release momentum: lead singles “Don’t Love Me”, “Waist”, and “Holy Ghost”, which have over 227 million Spotify streams.

Omah Lay has spoken openly about scrapping earlier versions after a creative betrayal through leaked DMs and go-to producer Tempoe’s insights pointing to a peer lifting his unreleased sound. He started from scratch, and ‘Clarity of Mind’ is the result: a lean, introspective body of work produced heavily by Tempoe (seven tracks), with additional input from Lekaa Beats on standouts like ‘Holy Ghost’ and ‘I Am’. With only one feature—Elmah on the vulnerable “Coping Mechanism”—there is a focus laser-sharp on Omah Lay’s signature half-sung, half-mumbled delivery over mid-tempo Afrobeats grooves laced with R&B warmth and spiritual undercurrents.

Omah Lay’s ‘Clarity of Mind’ is a solid, cohesive return that doubles down on emotional honesty. Raw self-awareness wrapped in the familiar Omah Lay alchemy of hedonism, faith, heartbreak, and quiet defeat.

The album opens strong with “Artificial Happiness”, where cannabis itself narrates the night—weed-fuelled escapism colliding with “Blood of Jesus” ad-libs, setting a smooth pace for the album listen. Tracks like “Jah Jah Knows” and “Canada Breeze” lean into uncertainty and displacement, while “Water Spirit” turns sensual/spiritual metaphors into an extended and very explicit bedroom scene. The pre-release singles shine brightest in context. “Don’t Love Me” is a brutal inventory of numbness—Hennessy and igbo no longer hit, so he throws money at fleeting connections (nails, rent, rooftops). It’s bleakly funny and uncomfortably honest. “Waist” flips party energy into something sharper: a bouncy ode to derriere that pauses mid-grind for a quick prayer (“Jesu chai o, scatter my enemies”), only to admit Samson’s downfall was the same.

Listening peaks mid-album with “Coping Mechanism” feat. Elmah, the most unguarded moment: she coaxes a smile while he unloads about carrying the world’s weight, touring for belonging, and feeling nothing in his shoulders. “Julia” turns a booked table for 20 into solitary reflection—hallelujahs ringing while he’d rather be alone. “I Am” confronts contradictions head-on.

It closes on “Amen”, a prayer for peace and enough money to buy whatever he wants, Louis Vuitton on his feet. The religious language and earthly temptations never resolve; they coexist in the same breath.

Omah Lay’s ‘Clarity of Mind’ offers the listener a therapeutic experience with brilliantly crafted music, with a sonic cohesion and vulnerability that permeates the 12-track project. Omah Lay remains the Port Harcourt poet who refuses to separate the sacred from the profane. He sees his flaws clearly – substances, women, and fame’s uniform – and keeps choosing them anyway. The “clarity” here is lands like the quiet defeat of knowing yourself and showing up tomorrow regardless.

Mavo – “Shy Lover”

Mavo continues a now-consistent release streak with a brand new single titled “Shy Lover” via Kilogbede Records / Inner Circle Entertainment. Produced by Wana Sn, “Shy Lover” arrives after consistent single releases and notable features like “Big Bum Bum” with Kidd Carder.

Mavo has been building steadily since his 2023 debut project, ‘Ukanigbe’, with momentum from EPs like SANKO and ‘Kilometer’, and the buzzy ‘Escaladizzy’, which earned him cosigns and street credibility. He blends melodic Afrobeats with rap-inflected flows, street slang, and relatable youth energy—often tagged as “burbur music” for its cultural storytelling rooted in Esan/Edo vibes.

Mavo’s “Shy Lover” is a soft, addictive melodic bop that flips the “shy guy” trope into something vulnerable yet playful. The production is clean and atmospheric: mid-tempo Afrobeats groove with warm synths, light percussion, and enough space for Mavo’s half-sung, confident-yet-stuttering delivery to breathe. It feels like a grown-up version of a crush song, where money brings boldness but one special person still makes you lose your cool.

The song opens with repetitive “Kilo, kilo” ad-libs, a signature Mavo slang touch, and the hook that instantly sticks: “When I see her face, I smile / Now I don dey shy / Kilo, ṣe na you be shy lover? / Domitila no dey fear God / This your body make me bankrupt…” Mavo plays with contrasts: he’s the “winner” who gets challenged in conversation (“We se feke to ta, when I talk, you talk back”), the guy who buys Gucci even when shy, yet this woman’s presence (and curves) leaves him “bankrupt” in confidence. There’s a cheeky nod to how money changed the game—“Since I start dey make money, everybody call on me… Since I make money, I no dey shy again”—but her “pim-pim” (playful slang for body/curves) brings the shyness right back. Thematically, it’s about the disarming power of attraction amid newfound success—vulnerability wrapped in swagger. It’s replay-friendly, the kind of track that grows on you after the third or fourth spin, perfect for car rides, chill playlists, or those “quiet confidence” moods. Mavo’s ‘Shy Lover’ is a charming, well-crafted single with strong replay value and emotional honesty.

Camidoh – Phony

Ghana’s smooth Afropop voice Camidoh, aka Derrick Osei, delivers a fresh standalone single titled “Phony”. Released via Rain Labs, the track is produced by Nawtyboi Tattoo alongside Camidoh himself.

Camidoh has been one of Ghana’s most consistent melodic exporters since breaking through with hits like “Sugarcane” and its remix featuring King Promise & Nxtra, “Adoley”, and more recent 2026 drops such as “Ride Solo” and “Jamming”. Known for his silky vocals, Caribbean-tinged Afropop fusions, and heartfelt delivery, he often blends romance, street realism, and feel-good energy. “Phony” arrives as a highly anticipated solo cut, teased since early 2026 and positioned as a potential summer vibe. Camidoh’s “Phony” is a smooth, infectious Afropop bop that leans into playful romance with Camidoh’s signature melodic charm. The production is a meld of polished warm synths, crisp percussion, light guitar accents, and enough bounce to keep it groovy without overpowering the vocals. Camidoh’s voice glides effortlessly, confident, and laced with that Ghanaian lilt that makes his hooks stick.

Camidoh dives into themes of love, admiration, and playful exaggeration: “What is the definition of love? / I’m never leaving you, it’s on God / Say this your booty e be confam / The Ghana Cedi wey go suffer / Most beautiful lady of all…” It’s flirtatious and hyperbolic, praising a woman’s allure in classic Afropop fashion while mixing currency jokes (“Ghana Cedi wey go suffer”) and declarations of loyalty. The title “Phony” appears to play on irony or exaggeration rather than literal fakery; think over-the-top compliments that feel “too good to be true” yet are delivered with genuine affection. There’s swagger, light-hearted flexing, and that signature Camidoh tenderness that delivers “Phony” with unapologetic charm and danceable energy.

The production by Nawtyboi Tattoo (who has worked with Camidoh on previous tracks like “NLF/Breakfast”) keeps things clean and vibrant: layered vocals, subtle ad-libs, and a groove that encourages shoulder rolls.

Camidoh continues proving why he’s a premier Afropop figure: consistent output, strong melodies, and an ability to deliver both club bangers and heartfelt tunes. “Phony” reinforces Camidoh’s lane as a reliable source of feel-good, high-quality Afropop. For new listeners, it’s an easy entry point into his world of smooth vocals and infectious grooves.

Pappy Kojo ft. Kuami Eugene – Roomie

Ghana’s Hiplife scene gets a fresh dose of chemistry with “Roomie” by Pappy Kojo featuring Kuami Eugene. Pappy Kojo, the “Real No” and Fante-rap pioneer from Takoradi) and Kuami Eugene are no strangers to collaboration. Their previous joint “My Heart” left a mark, and “Roomie” builds on that foundation with a smoother, more intimate vibe. Pappy brings his signature energetic Fante-flavoured rap and street-savvy delivery, while Kuami Eugene layers in his signature melodic highlife/Afropop vocals—passionate, catchy, and emotionally warm. This one leans into domestic intimacy and the “victory of perfect cohabitation”, turning the idea of a “roomie” into a playful celebration of shared space, deep connection, and finding “the one” you want to build a home with.

Pappy Kojo’s “Roomie” is a chemistry-packed Ghanaian bop that blends rap swagger with silky vocals for an easy, replayable love anthem. The production incorporates warm Afrobeat/highlife rhythms, light percussion, and melodic synths that give it that laid-back late-night or weekend-drive energy without losing groove. At under three minutes, it’s concise and hook-driven, making for a clinical masterpiece.

The track opens with smooth ad-libs and flows into flirtatious, affectionate bars that paints a picture of admiration and playful domesticity: “Baby, baby, be lady, lady / Since the ’80s, you drive me crazy / Mercedes, ’80s, you like me, baby…” Pappy handles the rap verses with his characteristic energy and Fante flair, while Kuami Eugene shines on the melodic hooks and ad-libs, delivering that emotional, sing-along quality fans love from him. The beat stays steady and inviting, allowing both voices to complement each other without clashing.

Pappy Kojo’s light-hearted celebration of a woman who makes everyday life feel special: the one who turns “roomie” status into something deeper, perhaps even wife material. Compared to Pappy Kojo’s broader catalog (often more rap-heavy or street-orientated) and Kuami Eugene’s melodic highlife/Afropop lane, “Roomie” finds a sweet middle ground.

“TE WO II”, the high-energy remix/sequel to Straffitti’s 2025 hit “Tẹ Wo”, from his BUR$T EP, features Nigerian rap heavyweight Zlatan and melodic collaborator Scottyolorin. Straffitti, born Olawale Olukolade, a multifaceted Lagos creative, found a viral moment with the original “Tẹ Wo” — a bouncy, body-celebrating Afropop/Amapiano-tinged cut that became a street and party staple. The “II” version amps up the formula with Zlatan’s signature street bounce and ad-lib fire, retaining Scottyolorin’s smooth melodic touches. At roughly 2:30–3 minutes, it’s built for instant replay: lively percussion, infectious grooves, and that signature “press and spend” energy.

“TE WO II” is a certified street banger and party starter that upgrades the original into something even more explosive. The production keeps the catchy rhythm of the original version while layering in fresh lively percussion, club-ready bounce. The core of “Tẹ Wo”, and its sequel revolves around playful, street-flavored admiration: “Kilofe, baby? Kilofe? / This your body na pepenape / Kilowi, baby? Make I press / Anything wey you want, I go tẹ / Ṣe, make I tẹ wo (Tẹ, tẹ)…” “Tẹ wo” is clever Yoruba street slang that doubles as “spend on her” or “send money”. The original had Straffitti and Scottyolorin trading verses on curves, spending, and good vibes. “TE WO II” brings Zlatan in for that raw, ad-lib-heavy street edge and a trademark bounce and hype energy that turns the track into a full squad anthem. The 3 artists attain a chemistry that doesn’t make the remix feel crowded. Straffitti handles the core flow and clever wordplay; Scottyolorin adds melodic sweetness and harmony; and Zlatan injects fiery rap verses and hype ad-libs that make records move. “TE WO II” stands out as one of the more immediate, replayable party records. It fits perfectly into Straffitti’s versatile catalogue (which blends hip-hop, Afropop, and Amapiano) and reinforces his growing reputation as a consistent voice in the Lagos scene.

Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems has made her third appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, reinforcing her steady presence on one of American television’s most visible music stages. Tems performed “What You Need” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 31, 2026. This marks her third appearance on the show and her second solo musical performance.

The Grammy-winning artist closed out the March 31, 2026 episode of the show as the night’s musical guest, delivering a performance that continues her run of high-profile international appearances. The episode, which also featured interviews with Hollywood actors like Cameron Diaz and Dan Levy, positioned Tems as the final act of the night—a slot often reserved for artists with strong audience pull and cultural relevance.

This latest appearance marks a clear progression in her relationship with the platform. Tems first appeared on ‘The Tonight Show’ in 2021 alongside Wizkid, performing the global hit ‘Essence’—a record that played a central role in pushing Afrobeats into mainstream American consciousness—in an empty studio amid COVID restrictions.

She returned in May 2024 with a solo set, performing a smooth medley of “Born in the Wild” and “Love Me JeJe”. That moment introduced her as a standalone force, no longer orbiting a global hit but building her own identity on the international stage.

Her third outing now feels less like a confirmation. Last night’s set added another strong entry to her late-night résumé.

Each visit has shown Tems delivering controlled, emotive vocals that blend Afrobeats, R&B, and soul. She performs with minimal theatrics yet holds the stage through vocal clarity and presence alone. The choice of “What You Need” continues her pattern of showcasing new material on major platforms.

Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show’ has become a recurring touchpoint for global artists looking to bridge markets. Broadcast from Studio 6B in New York, the show blends interviews and live performances, often serving as a cultural gateway for artists crossing into American audiences.

There is also a quiet consistency in how Tems approaches these moments. Her performances on the show have leant into restraint, with the focus staying on tone, presence, and control. It is a style that travels well across borders, especially in spaces where subtlety can stand out against louder staging.

This third appearance arrives at a time when African artists are becoming regular contributors to the programming cycle. Tems’ trajectory mirrors that shift. She has built an identity that translates well to television audiences. She is not being introduced anymore; she is being re-invited.

There’s a quiet tension around the beret in Nigeria. It sits at the intersection of style and risk, where a simple fashion choice can carry unintended meaning. In other parts of the world, a beret is just an accessory. Here, it can read as a statement you didn’t mean to make.

The beret’s history is older and more layered than its current fashion cycle suggests. It traces back to rural communities in the Basque region between modern-day France and Spain, where it was worn for practicality. Basque farmers and shepherds wore them for practical protection against the weather. Production scaled up in the 19th century in towns like Oloron-Sainte-Marie, with the French military later adopting them as standard headgear.

Over time, it moved into military use across Europe, becoming part of standard-issue uniforms. That shift gave it structure, discipline, and identity. By the 20th century, it had also entered political and cultural symbolism. Revolutionaries, most famously Che Guevara, wore it as a marker of resistance. Artists and intellectuals adopted it as shorthand for creativity and nonconformity.

Fashion absorbed all of this, and the beret became a flexible symbol. In global fashion, berets signal creativity and rebellion. Artists, intellectuals, and bohemians have worn them for decades. They appeared in French Resistance efforts during World War II and with groups like the Black Panthers. The beret became a staple in women’s fashion by the mid-20th century and still evokes Parisian chic and artistic flair today.

But Nigeria complicates that reading.

Here, colour carries weight. University confraternities, known locally as cults, use berets in specific colours as identifiers. A yellow beret often marks Buccaneers members. A green beret points to Maphite. A red beret links to Vikings. A black beret connects to Black Axe, Aye, or Two-Two groups. A blue beret signals Eiye. These associations run deep in campus culture and have spread beyond universities. They are identifiers. They can signal allegiance, hierarchy, or history within a group. These associations are not theoretical. They are lived realities shaped by years of violence, territorial clashes, and coded communication.

Wearing one of these colours without affiliation carries real risks and can be interpreted as a claim. In some situations, it can attract confrontation. In others, it creates distance. People choose not to engage. They assume you are part of something they would rather avoid. Even without violence, strangers assume cult membership. The suspicion creates instant tension in public spaces.

And this is where fashion loses its innocence. The same item that reads as stylish in one environment reads as loaded in another. The fashion piece that elevates an outfit elsewhere becomes a liability here. A red beret in a lookbook is bold; on a Nigerian street or campus, it may be a signal flare.

There is also the issue of perception over intention. Fashion often relies on personal expression. In this case, public interpretation matters more. You might be referencing a runway, a vintage aesthetic, or a cultural icon. The observer may see something else entirely. In a society where cult-related violence has shaped real fear, people respond to what they recognise, not what you intended.

That gap is why many people avoid berets altogether. Practicality wins over style when safety enters the equation. The accessory demands context. Without it, the outfit becomes secondary. This divide shows how local contexts reshape global trends. A simple hat turns controversial based on where you stand.

Still, the beret has not disappeared from Nigerian fashion. It shows up in controlled spaces—editorials, photoshoots, and curated events. In those environments, the audience understands the styling language. There is less room for misreading. Some fashion-forward individuals also wear it carefully, often choosing safer colours or pairing it in ways that dilute any coded meaning.

The tension remains unresolved. The beret is globally recognised as a stylish, expressive piece. Locally, it carries a different kind of visibility. It asks the wearer to be aware of more than aesthetics.

In a moment that felt like the culmination of years of grinding and breakthrough, Nigerian Afrobeats star Ruger wrapped his sold-out 2026 Australia tour last night at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, visibly moved by the outpouring of love from fans who turned the finale into a high-octane celebration of African rhythm Down Under.

Fresh off electrifying stops in Sydney (March 20), Melbourne (March 21), and Perth (March 27)—where even torrential rain couldn’t dampen the sold-out crowds—Ruger took the Brisbane stage for what would be the emotional capstone of the run. The energy was “mad”, as he later described it, with the venue packed wall-to-wall and the crowd singing every word back to him. But as the lights came up and the confetti settled, the artist—known for his smooth vocals and street-edged charisma—couldn’t hold back the weight of the moment.

In a raw video message posted immediately after the show, Ruger stood backstage amid the post-show chaos, voice thick with gratitude: “Brisbane closed the Australian tour with mad energy. I’m grateful to God for bringing me this far and giving me the best fans in the world. I love you forever. BYE BYE AUSTRALIA…Glory be to GOD.” He then teased his next stop in Zimbabwe, but the real story was in the emotion behind the words, a clear sign of a man overwhelmed by how far his music has travelled on his shoulders.

Ruger’s Australia run marks a significant milestone for Afrobeats’ expansion beyond its African and European strongholds. Sold-out shows across multiple cities, die-hard fans queuing in the rain, and crowds that knew every hook word-for-word prove what many in the industry have been saying: Afrobeats is a movement with staying power. For an artist who broke through with hits that blend melodic Afrobeats-Dancehall with raw street energy, seeing that same fire mirrored back from Australian stages is the kind of validation that humbles.

What makes this conclusion especially poignant is the personal arc. Ruger has spoken before about the grind of building a global career from Nigeria’s music scene. To close out a multi-city tour like this, shutting down venues, creating memories that fans will talk about for years, and doing it all while the world watches is enough to move even the most stoic performer to tears of joy and disbelief.

As Ruger heads next to Zimbabwe, the takeaway from Australia 2026 is that artists like Ruger are leading the charge with heart, hustle, and unforgettable nights. Brisbane didn’t just close out a tour—it witnessed history, and Ruger left it all on that stage, emotions and all.
