Nasty C – Free (Album)

Nasty C has been a fixture of South African hip-hop for nearly a decade, but ‘Free‘ lands as his most daring project yet. Sixteen tracks deep, the album isn’t bound by one lane, it ricochets between slick trap cadences, soulful meditations, and even sprinkles of maskandi, a nod to Zulu traditional music. That blend makes ‘Free’ feel like a sonic manifesto: a rapper claiming space beyond formula.

The timing is symbolic too. This is his first album outside the big-label system, and you can hear the breath in it. Songs like “Intro” and “MSP” carry the playful swagger fans expect, while “Selfish” peels back into raw sincerity. The features are purposeful: Blxckie sparking hometown synergy, Tellaman injecting melody, Tshego sliding in with sleek charisma. Each guest adds, but the vision is still firmly Nasty’s.

More than just a rap album, ‘Free’ reads like a liberation document. It’s about what happens when an artist sheds pressure and makes music that reflects every corner of their personality. South Africa has long known his power; ‘Free’ suggests the rest of the world should start paying closer attention.

Skales – Martina’s Son (Album)

For Skales, ‘Martina’s Son’ is like a love letter from skales named after his late mother. The album threads gratitude, faith, and resilience through Afropop, highlife, amapiano, and street-pop. Skales has lived enough lives in this industry—EME breakout, solo reinvention, viral resurgences—that he could’ve easily gone the nostalgia route, but instead, he digs deeper.

The opener, “Until We Meet Again” sets the emotional stage with vulnerability, while “Glory” alongside Fave soars with melodic optimism. “Tota E Mole” where Yinka Ayefele bridges gospel with Afropop, is a generational handshake with Skales paying homage to the roots while still innovating. Add in cross-border touches with Joshua Baraka, Innoss’B, and even a Spanish remix of “Shake Body”, and the album becomes both a deeply Nigerian record and a global experiment.

What makes ‘Martina’s Son’ resonate is the balance. It’s personal enough to feel intimate, but wide-ranging enough to soundtrack a dancefloor. It shows an artist who refuses to let the industry’s ebbs and flows dictate his story. Instead, Skales reclaims his narrative through memory and reinvention.

Qing Madi – Scumbag

Following a brief hiatus and a rocky episode that saw her part ways with her record label. With a new single Qing Madi graces the scene with her dearly missed sngwriting  talent and vocal prowess. Titled “Scumbag”, the track is equal parts confessional and reclamation. Over Wademix’s airy production, she admits to falling for the kind of man everyone warned her about. Yet instead of spiraling, she turns the moment into self-awareness, even empowerment.

The strength of Qing’s artistry lies in her ability to coat vulnerability with melody. Beyond heartbreak, “Scumbag” is a soundtrack of accountability, of knowing your own patterns and still choosing growth. With her debut album ‘I Am The Blueprint’ still fresh in memory, this track feels like a bridge into her next chapter: one where the themes get heavier, but the confidence grows sharper. She’s becoming one of the most compelling young voices in Afrobeats genre-blending with poise, but storytelling with teeth.

Iyanya ft. Fido – Sorry

Few things in Afrobeats are as reliable as an Iyanya love record. “Sorry”, his new collaboration with rising act Fido, leans into that strength but adds a modern twist. The production, handled by Ubi Franklin and Mikaba Beatz, is lush yet understated with percussions rolling under heartfelt melodies. Iyanya sings like a man who’s loved, lost, and wants another chance, while Fido brings youthful urgency that cuts through the vulnerability.

It’s also the first taste of Iyanya’s forthcoming album ‘The Forester’s Son’, due later this month. If the single is any indication, we’re about to get an older, wiser Iyanya, one still rooted in danceable Afropop but more deliberate in message. With Fido, they create a song that feels timeless yet timely, a reminder that Afrobeats thrives when the oldtimers and the newcomers share the mic.

Riick – Sanity

Fresh out in the game, Riick kicked off his professional career by sharing his debut single ‘Surrender’ with the world in July. On this week’s New Music Friday, he displays tenacity and readiness for the music scene with a new release titled “Sanity”. On the mid-tempo, introspective track, Riick shows listeners a truly vulnerable side with a delivery that cuts straight to the heart. He self-examines the state of his mental health and justifies the coping mechanisms he leans on to navigate grief, loss, and depression. The production choice by Killashay carries a heaviness in its slow-paced flow, perfectly complementing the somber theme of the record.

Although a new voice in the music scene, Riick shows a masterful ability to blend vulnerable storytelling with infectious, soulful melodies that carry unusual emotional depth. A sonic staple in this part of the world, it feels only a matter of time before the world turns to his music offering.

Magixx – Unlimited

Nigerian crooner Magixx has dropped his electrifying new single, titled Unlimited. Chocolate City ft. Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Blaqbonez – Legacy

Two decades in, Chocolate City’s hold on the Nigerian rap scene doesn’t seem to have waned, and the new release from their camp is a rightfully earned flex of its rap pedigree. Legacy plays like a cypher carved in stone — Ice Prince with his polished glide, Jesse Jagz dropping laid-back wisdom, and Blaqbonez threading youthful swagger through the verses. G-Plus Chang and Jace Kim’s beat nods to the label’s golden era while keeping its sneakers firmly in the present. It’s a track that doubles as a victory lap and a warning shot: the throne is still occupied.

Qing Madi ft. Didi B, Jux – LOCA

LOCA is a three-way handshake between West and East Africa, with Afrobeats, Afro house, and Bongo Flava trading passports. Qing Madi leads with a charismatic hook, Didi B injects melodic mischief, and Jux smooths the edges with effortless romance. Del B keeps the production understated but layered, letting each artist’s personality bleed through.

Adding more heritage to the night is Flavour, highlife heavyweight and confirmed recipient of the Headies Lifetime Achievement Award. His inclusion brings a rich cultural anchor to an evening themed “Back to Base”, a nod to the awards’ return to Nigerian soil after two years of U.S.-based editions.

This year’s ceremony is the first of two scheduled for 2025 as the Headies attempts to close its now-infamous gap year, an issue that’s plagued the award’s consistency and industry relevance. The nominations list, which includes heavyweights like Rema, Tems, Ayra Starr, and OdumoduBlvck, has already stirred conversation, with critics pointing out a few eyebrow-raising omissions and questions about the eligibility of certain entries.

Still, in spite of the noise, the stage is set for what might be a much-needed renaissance for the long-running awards. In a recent interview, Headies founder Ayo Animashaun admitted the Grammys are now more celebrated locally than the Headies themselves. An honest critique, and perhaps a call to arms.

Whether this edition marks a true reset or just another highlight reel remains to be seen. But for now, the lights are back on at home.

Taxi Driver — Joeboy

Joeboy takes center stage on this week’s New Music Friday with the lead single of his forthcoming album, ‘Viva Lavida’. The song, which he teased through short film episodes starring comedian Layi Wasabi and public figure Asher Kine, features the actors sharing heartbreak stories in the backseat of a taxi where Joeboy, playing the role of the “Taxi Driver,” also assumes the part of a therapist.

One of the most talented new-school pop artists, Tar1q, is known for weaving themes of heartbreak, love, and life’s musings into his music. His latest release, ‘Must Have Been’, arrives remarkably soon after an eventful 2024 and the release of his studio EP, ‘Okada Airlines’.

Tar1q’s innate ability to craft emotive melodies sets him apart from his peers, and on ‘Must Have Been’, he bids a lover an early goodbye, mourning what could have been. The song finds him grappling with the pain of his new reality, lamenting that despite now being strangers, he put in significant effort to make the relationship work.  

A striking element of the track is the bridge, featuring a feminine vocal, not listed as a guest artist but acknowledged as one of the song’s writers. There’s a strong possibility that a new Tar1q project is on the horizon, as he hinted in his social media caption for the release, which included spammy brown heart emojis and the cryptic phrase: “Brown Hearts everyday”

Olivia — Lasmid

Ghanian singer Lasmid has released his debut single for the year 2025 titled ‘Olivia’. Signed to Nigerian record label Dvpper Digital, Lasmid’s new record ‘Olivia’ captures the emotional state of the artist over his muse Olivia who has apparently broken his heart and directly contributed to his excess consumption in alcohol. From the lyrics, the song appears to be a melancholic reflection on heartbreak, and loneliness. Lasmid expresses emotional turmoil, referencing drinking tequila and feeling mentally distressed. The mention of “Olivia” suggests that the song revolves around a lost love or a complicated relationship that has left Lasmid feeling abandoned and sad.

Lines like “On this lonely road, bitches dem be stepping on my toes, making me feel sad o” indicate that the artist faces struggles beyond just romantic pain, perhaps betrayal. The phrase “What I thought was green turned blue” suggests what was shared and once perceived as promising has turned into sadness.

On ‘Olivia’ Lasmid crafts an emotionally raw, introspective tone, with elements of vulnerability into melodies.

Bere Mi (Reimagined) — ID Cabasa ft. Zlatan, T.I BLAZE

Veteran Nigerian producer ID Cabasa breathes new life into a classic with the reimagined Bere Mi (Ask About Me), featuring 9ice, Zlatan, T.I Blaze, and 2Phat. ‘Ole,’ the follow-up to ‘See Finish’ featuring Bnxn, resonated with audiences beyond Nigeria, peaking at the number one spot on the Uganda Top 100 Apple Music Chart. At this point, her talent was undeniable. 

Approximately a year after her debut, she released the seven-track, self-titled extended play ‘Qing Madi‘ in November 2023, which peaked at number 14 on the Nigeria Apple Music Chart. Whatever the case may be, Teni kicks off her music year with solid momentum, releasing the new single alongside its visuals. 

Magixx — Winter & Summer

On January 12th, Magixx kicked off the new year teasing “Winter & Summer,” sporting a new, rockstar-like hairstyle while appearing somewhat desolate, holding a bottle of liquor that evokes memories and confessions. With great anticipation, we await Qing Madi’s debut album, “I Am The Blueprint,” which arrives exactly a week from now. Starting her rollout in late October last year, Qing Madi and her team have done an impressive job creating an engaging experience for fans, particularly this month. From opening the year with a captivating performance of the emotive “Goosebumps” on Colors to releasing weekly singles compiled into an EP, and finally revealing an album tracklist with no guest features, Qing Madi has kept her audience hooked.  What makes Qing Madi’s artistry intriguing is her ability to share stories from every possible phase of a “lovecycle.” Unlike the chaotic “Favorite Psycho,” “Ali Bomaye” introduces a love-struck Qing Madi, referring to her muse as her “peace.” That’s progress for her—and we’re here for it.

Still signed with Dapper Music, unlike his former label mates Seyi Vibez and Muyeez, Tml Vibez collaborates with Young Jonn and 4kerty on “Paper.” Since joining the Dapper family, with Seyi Vibez playing a pivotal role in his career, Tml Vibez continues to demonstrate why he is one of the preferred new street-hop artists, perhaps due to his ability to create a calm, groovy track like “Paper” while retaining elements of a street-hop song. Young Jonn, with his track record as a stellar collaborator, complements Tml Vibez’s delivery, resulting in an undeniably addictive track.

Olamide – Idan Buruku

“Idan Buruku” feels long overdue, considering Olamide has been teasing this gritty side of himself on tracks like “Synchro System” from Ikigai. Clearly, Olamide couldn’t keep his raw essence locked away forever. Out of nowhere, he surprises the industry with a little over a minute-long freestyle titled “Idan Buruku.”While he certainly doesn’t need to prove anything at this point in his career, moments like this serve as necessary reminders.  On “Idan Buruku,” Olamide, with commanding confidence, reaffirms that he’s still got it and can unleash it at will: “Fuck that top 3 convo shii mosafejo, Always on my demon time jenja tebafegbo, Tobati de di rap iyalayin ema shu sabo, Lyrical Kim Jung-Un o ya werey ju maluuu, Eyin lokan mi wa timba gbo beat ma di evil, Devil mama tremble ama ki igbe eje Jesu, ‘Cause I’m really bloody with it, nobody on my level.”

Despite his limited digital presence and largely reclusive lifestyle, Omah Lay has maintained a steady output since releasing his critically acclaimed debut album in 2022. From his last single, “Moving (Francis Mercier Remix),” released in 2024, to the deluxe edition of ‘Boy Alone’ in 2023, and the announcement of his sophomore album, ‘Clarity Of Mind’ (COM), in July 2024, Omah Lay has kept his fans engaged. The initial lead single, “Moving,” suggests a shift in his music. While his work is often characterized by heavy, melancholic emotions, “Moving” hints at a newfound ability to manage these feelings, which may ultimately influence the album’s themes, style, and overall execution.

Uncle K — Kizz Daniel

Kizz Daniel‘s highly anticipated ‘Uncle K’, a four-track project featuring collaborations with Runtown, Victony, and Phyno, was slated for release on November 29, 2024, intended as a year-end offering. However, as fans awaited its midnight arrival on digital streaming platforms (DSPs), the project failed to appear. This caused considerable disappointment, especially as Kizz Daniel did not initially issue an official statement explaining the postponement. Instead, he removed all posts about the project, including older ones, from his social media. Approximately five days later, Kizz Daniel shared a video announcing that ‘Uncle K’ had not been scrapped but would be released sometime in 2025. The video was captioned, “Family First, Music Second…BRB—Uncle K.” This delay raises the possibility that Kizz Daniel that he may add further tracks, extending the originally planned four-track project. 

I Am The Blueprint — Qing Madi

Since her impressive entry into the music scene, Qing Madi has consistently demonstrated her intention to establish a lasting presence. As one of the promising stars of the new generation, Qing Madi effortlessly connects with listeners through her undeniable talent and irresistible music. The R&B fusion songstress released her self-titled EP in 2023, significantly boosting her mainstream recognition. The EP, which featured her breakout single “Ole,” also spawned successes like “Vision” and “American Love.” In 2024, Qing Madi released a deluxe version of her debut EP, including a remix of ”Vision” featuring American R&B artist Chloe Bailey—a noteworthy achievement for an emerging artist. In less than three years, Qing Madi’s journey has culminated in her debut album, ‘I Am The Blueprint’, scheduled for release on January 31, 2025, with a rollout that began with her recent emotional drop, “Goosebumps,” in October of the previous year.

No Sign Of Weakness — Burna Boy

Burna Boy has been vocal about his forthcoming album, ‘No Sign Of Weakness’, a title he impressed upon fans only months after the release of his eighth studio album ‘I Told Them’. While Burna Boy has yet to announce a specific release date, there have been moments suggesting an imminent arrival, with snippets of tracks surfacing online. While most of these snippets, such as “Empty Chairs,” “No Fly Zone,” and “Don’t Need You,” are confirmed and have even been performed by Burna Boy himself, an official track list for ‘No Sign Of Weakness’ has not yet been released. However, all indications suggest the album will drop this year, with “Higher” potentially included.

5ive — Davido

‘Timeless’, one of Davido’s finest albums, released in 2023, proved that the artist, not typically known for his knack on albums, can create a cohesive masterpiece. The surprise announcement of Davido’s forthcoming fifth studio album might seem premature, yet it appears thoughtfully planned. This is evident in the album’s title, ‘5ive’, the intended year of release, the cover artwork, and, of course, the fact that it is his fifth studio album. The album announcement coincided with Davido’s second release of 2024, “Funds,” featuring Odumodublvck and Chike, shortly after his first release with YG Marley. The 17-track album is set for release on March 14, 2025.

Viva Lavida — Joeboy

Joeboy‘s significant contribution to the Nigerian Afro-R&B scene will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. One of Nigeria’s exceptionally talented artists, he has consistently delivered excellent albums and singles that have resonated organically with a wide audience, propelling him to commercial success. While this may be speculative, his commencement of the Lavida World Tour in Perth, Australia, coupled with his tweet “2025 – Viva Lavida Year,” strongly suggests that this tour will culminate in a significant moment for the artist: the release of an album.

Tiwa Savage’s Last Studio Album

Tiwa Savage has undeniably reached a later stage in her career, having seen a shift in her core fanbase, with less of the fervent anticipation that characterized her earlier years. Over the past three years, she has released several projects using varied strategies in hopes of reconnecting with a broader commercial audience, yet without fully recapturing that earlier momentum. While she has been active recently, with chart-topping features and singles, a bittersweet announcement emerged via her Instagram story: her next album may be her last, expressing a sense of exhaustion after her efforts. Blaqbonez apparently has no intention of slowing down his musical output, even after his three-track single “Of Many Colors” in October of the previous year. He began the year by teasing new music on January 1st, featuring his signature flossy lines and clever punchlines, with the caption “Consistency, 2025.” The following day, Blaqbonez quoted the now-viral video, hinting at an album on the horizon: “Almost time for the album. Gear up.” While the exact timing remains uncertain, given his last album, ‘Emeka Must Shine’, was released in 2023, it is hoped that the new project will arrive in 2025.

God’s Engineering 3 — A-Q

In a post shared across his social media platforms in October of the previous year, A-Q announced the third and final installment of the ‘God’s Engineering’ series. Inspired by real-life events, the album is scheduled for release in May or June of this year. A-Q is undoubtedly expected to conclude the series with his characteristic lyrical depth and relatable themes.
