In a moment that felt like the culmination of years of grinding and breakthrough, Nigerian Afrobeats star Ruger wrapped his sold-out 2026 Australia tour last night at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, visibly moved by the outpouring of love from fans who turned the finale into a high-octane celebration of African rhythm Down Under.

Fresh off electrifying stops in Sydney (March 20), Melbourne (March 21), and Perth (March 27)—where even torrential rain couldn’t dampen the sold-out crowds—Ruger took the Brisbane stage for what would be the emotional capstone of the run. The energy was “mad”, as he later described it, with the venue packed wall-to-wall and the crowd singing every word back to him. But as the lights came up and the confetti settled, the artist—known for his smooth vocals and street-edged charisma—couldn’t hold back the weight of the moment.

In a raw video message posted immediately after the show, Ruger stood backstage amid the post-show chaos, voice thick with gratitude: “Brisbane closed the Australian tour with mad energy. I’m grateful to God for bringing me this far and giving me the best fans in the world. I love you forever. BYE BYE AUSTRALIA…Glory be to GOD.” He then teased his next stop in Zimbabwe, but the real story was in the emotion behind the words, a clear sign of a man overwhelmed by how far his music has travelled on his shoulders.

Ruger’s Australia run marks a significant milestone for Afrobeats’ expansion beyond its African and European strongholds. Sold-out shows across multiple cities, die-hard fans queuing in the rain, and crowds that knew every hook word-for-word prove what many in the industry have been saying: Afrobeats is a movement with staying power. For an artist who broke through with hits that blend melodic Afrobeats-Dancehall with raw street energy, seeing that same fire mirrored back from Australian stages is the kind of validation that humbles.

What makes this conclusion especially poignant is the personal arc. Ruger has spoken before about the grind of building a global career from Nigeria’s music scene. To close out a multi-city tour like this, shutting down venues, creating memories that fans will talk about for years, and doing it all while the world watches is enough to move even the most stoic performer to tears of joy and disbelief.

As Ruger heads next to Zimbabwe, the takeaway from Australia 2026 is that artists like Ruger are leading the charge with heart, hustle, and unforgettable nights. Brisbane didn’t just close out a tour—it witnessed history, and Ruger left it all on that stage, emotions and all.

Spotify is marking a significant milestone: five years of operations in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya since its launch in these markets in February 2021. The platform recently commemorated the anniversary by unveiling key streaming data and all-time charts — numbers that double as a cultural timestamp for how music consumption has evolved across the three countries.

The official announcement, shared via Spotify’s Africa-focused social channels, carried a simple but telling caption: “Celebrating 5 years of Spotify in Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, powered by you. Swipe through and let the data do the talking.”

And the data does speak — loudly.

A Listener-Powered Expansion

Five years in, the growth is listener-driven and unmistakable. Users across the three countries have collectively created over 38.2 million playlists:

Nigeria leads with approximately 25 million playlists

Kenya follows with about 9.5 million

Ghana records roughly 3.7 million

In Nigeria, the average listener age sits at 26 years old, reinforcing what industry observers already know: streaming culture in the region is powered by a young, digitally native audience shaping trends in real time.

Listening has climbed steadily year-on-year. Kenya alone has recorded an average 68% annual growth through 2025, while the number of Kenyan artists distributing music on Spotify has risen by 112% since 2021 – a sign that the platform is influencing not just consumption but creation.

Afrobeats at the Centre of the Story

At the heart of Spotify’s five-year data is the continued ascent of Afrobeats. The genre’s dominance is especially visible in Nigeria and Ghana, where local stars consistently top both artist and song charts. The numbers affirm what global charts have hinted at for years: Afrobeats is no longer emerging — it is embedded.

In Nigeria, Asake tops the list as the most-streamed artist of all time since Spotify’s 2021 launch — a defining achievement for the Afrobeats star. He is followed by:

Wizkid

Seyi Vibez

Burna Boy

Davido

Asake also dominates the songs chart, with tracks like ‘Remember’ and ‘Lonely at the Top’ ranking among the most-streamed. Meanwhile, Wizkid holds a notable peak daily streaming record of 21.6 million streams among Nigerian artists — a benchmark that underscores his enduring pull.

The list captures Ghana’s position as both a contributor to — and consumer of — the broader Afrobeats and global rap ecosystem.

Kenya’s most-streamed artists list leans more international, highlighting the country’s diverse listening habits:

Drake

Chris Brown

Future

Burna Boy

Travis Scott

Still, regional hits have carved strong positions on Kenyan song charts. Tracks such as “Asiwaju” by Ruger, “Rush” by Ayra Starr, and multiple Asake collaborations demonstrate how East African listeners are deeply plugged into West Africa’s sonic exports.

More Than Metrics

Beyond headline numbers, Spotify’s five-year celebration signals something broader: a platform increasingly shaped by African listeners rather than merely operating in Africa. Over half a decade, fan behaviour — playlisting, streaming spikes, and daily records — has powered both artist visibility and cross-border discovery.

From Lagos to Accra to Nairobi, the data reflects sustained momentum. Afrobeats continues to travel. Local artists are uploading more music. Young listeners are curating culture in public playlists.

Five years in, Spotify’s presence in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya reads less like market entry and more like integration — a half-decade defined by streaming growth, global amplification, and a generation pressing play.

As the weekend beckons, Africa’s sonic landscape pulses with fresh energy on this New Music Friday, where Afrobeats’ unyielding rhythm meets bold experimentation and raw introspection. From Seyi Vibez’s triumphant return to the Fuji-infused streets to Omah Lay’s sultry tease of temptations untold, today’s drops weave a tapestry of resilience, desire, and unapologetic swagger. These releases are anthems for the hustlers, the lovers, and the dreamers pushing boundaries under the November sky, reminding us why the continent’s sound continues to conquer global airwaves.

On first listen, ‘Fuji Moto‘ races in like a high-octane rally through Lagos’ restless veins—Seyi Vibez taking back the street-pop crown with a 14-track odyssey steeped in Yoruba Fuji tradition but dressed in Afrobeats’ modern shimmer. The opener, “Fuji Moto”, sets the project ablaze with its percussive frenzy and meditative bars on the grind, laying the groundwork for a narrative that peaks on “Pressure”, where talking drums spar with trap snares and Vibez’s hunger bleeds through every syllable.

“Ama” bursts open with celebratory buoyancy—pure road-trip singalong energy—while “Universe” sees him slip into vulnerability, his voice cracking over stripped-back production that lets the feeling breathe. Fuji Moto is ambitious without being indulgent, the clearest signpost of Seyi’s evolution from the Children of Africa fragments into a full-bodied global statement.

The guest list is stacked without being noisy: French Montana on “Pressure”, Trippie Redd on “UP”, NLE Choppa on “MACHO”, and Olamide anchoring the spiritual, street-shimmering “FUJI PARTY”. Each collaboration extends Seyi’s world without diluting its grit. The album’s sonic thread—lush, dusty, spiritual, unafraid—feels like a genre in bloom.

With ‘Fuji Moto‘, Seyi Vibez doesn’t just revisit Fuji’s sacred roots; he repackages them for a generation hungry for something deeper than trends. It’s a bold, culture-forward album that reminds you where he’s coming from—and just how global he intends to go.

Omah Lay’s “Waist” slinks in like a late-night whisper, following a brief hiatus riddled with change in management, releases and social media rants, with a two-minute Afro-fusion gem that’s all velvet vocals and minimalist menace, teasing the chaos of desire with the precision of a heartbeat. From the jump, that repetitive chorus—”Na 2 people something she carry for waist waist”—hooks you with its playful pidgin confession, blending humour and heat as Omah Lay admits how a lover’s curves unravel his resolve, backed by Tempoe’s layered percussion that simmers rather than boils. It’s seductive in its brevity, the ethereal harmonies and velvety delivery evoking a dimly lit club where temptation reigns supreme; no overproduced bombast here, just infectious melody that lingers like perfume, priming us perfectly for his upcoming ‘Clarity of Mind’ album. On first listen, it’s a masterclass in less-is-more—craving-worthy, chaotic, and utterly Omah Lay.

Ruger’s “Muhammad Ali (Can’t Relate)” punches through the speakers like a title-fight uppercut, a dancehall-drenched brag-fest that crowns the Blownboy as Afrobeats’ undisputed champ in under three minutes. Blaise Beatz’s lively rhythms—greasy hi-hats and stomping bass—propel Ruger’s gravelly flow as he likens his nonstop wins to Ali’s rope-a-dope mastery, spitting lines like “Money coming nonstop; may nothing block where my money comes from” with infectious bravado that turns the track into a communal chant. The hook’s repetitive “You can’t relate to this” begs for crowd participation, its energy electric and unbothered, floating above haters while celebrating grit-fuelled elevation. Ruger’s ‘Muhammad Ali (Can’t Relate)’ is pure adrenaline—a confidence-soaked reminder of Ruger’s lane-carving prowess, leaving a listener shadowboxing the air and hitting repeat for that victorious high. Even as he steps away briefly from his “BlownBoy Ru” universe, the finesse and fire stay intact.

TAR1Q’s double-drop “Free/Why” emerges as a soulful diptych of liberation and longing, the Nigerian crooner’s R&B-tinged Afrobeats unpacking emotional shackles with a maturity that belies his rising-star status. “Free” opens with airy synths and a confessional plea for release from toxic ties, TAR1Q’s falsetto gliding over sparse beats that build into a cathartic chorus smothered by a pacy beat reminiscent of mara street music, catapulting a listener into a rave without Tar1q’s introspective lyrics losing their grip on a listener, evoking a late-night bonfire-themed party where vulnerability feels like victory. Flipping to “Why”, the tempo dips into brooding Afro R&B introspection, questioning love’s betrayals with pidgin-laced bars that hit like quiet storms, the production’s subtle bass pulses mirroring the ache. On initial play, it’s TAR1Q at his most unguarded, blending Son of the Moon-era polish with rawer edges; these aren’t just singles—they’re therapy sessions disguised as earworms, urging replays for their layered depth and hopeful undercurrent.

“Chella Chant” arrives like an empowerment mantra on the move—a vibrant, rhythm-heavy burst of self-belief from one of West Africa’s emerging voices. Chella’s vocals land like spoken word doused in melody, weaving themes of loyalty, self-trust, and resilience into a chant-like hook that sticks to the ribs.

The production—courtesy of Gsticksz and Chella—leans into celebratory percussion and festive uplift, turning the track into a dance-floor moment of defiance. As the lead single for his upcoming EP of the same title, “Chella Chant” sets the stage for an artist ready to turn personal affirmation into sonic warfare.

Smallgod’s “Hustle” (feat. Headie One & Kweku Smoke) is a gritty cross-continental flex, bridging Ghanaian drill’s raw edge with UK rap’s deadpan punch in a booming collab that glorifies the grind like a late-night boardroom cypher. The beat—uncluttered piano riffs over greasy hi-hats and seismic bass—provides the perfect canvas for Headie One’s star-powered verse, name-dropping LV bags and street-to-boardroom flips with effortless menace, while Kweku Smoke counters with Kumasi-forged flows that add fiery local flavour, all tied by Smallgod’s seamless curation. Themes of entrepreneurial hustle and unbreakable loyalty pulse through every bar, the track’s momentum building to a hook that’s equal parts motivational mantra and menace. On debut spin, it’s a high-wire act of fusion that pays off spectacularly—addictive negative space lets the bars breathe, making this a replay staple for anyone chasing that relentless come-up vibe.

Viva Lavida – Joeboy

Following an immersive rollout experience that engaged listeners and built high anticipation for his third studio album Viva Lavida, Joeboy’s 13-track project finally hits streaming platforms as a strong contender on today’s New Music Friday. Having unveiled the tracklist only a few days before the project’s release, it became evident that ‘Viva Lavida’ had been in motion for quite some time. Lead releases as far back as Osadebe in February 2024 and the Qing Madi-assisted Adenuga all made the album cut. While it’s still too early to pass judgment on Joeboy’s third studio album, singles leading up to the release—SMH and Taxi Driver—offer hints of what to expect sonically, with executive producer Tempoe steering the direction. Viva Lavida features some of Afrobeats’ finest, including Olamide, Elana Dara, and Wizard Chan. Earlier releases like SMH have been refined with an additional verse and new production elements layered onto Adenuga.

A Ruger project is often characterized by outbursts and subtle jabs at peers, communicated through his social media accounts. The potential greatness of his project can almost be measured by how cocky his subliminal posts are. ‘Blown Boy Ru’, Ruger’s sophomore studio album, is a 13-track piece that explores his Casanova flair and themes of love. Arriving a little over a year after his 17-track debut album Ru the World, Blown Boy Ru sees an assured Ruger delivering Afropop records in sublime fashion, with features standing out as the high points of the project. His ability to accommodate guest artists and seamlessly integrate them into his world shines throughout ‘Blown Boy Ru’, from the Zlatan collaboration to the presence of one of dancehall’s finest, Kranium. The album is steeped in Ruger’s signature themes—his affinity for unstable relationships and subtle hints of toxicity.

The Nigerian music scene continues to witness a surge in artists breaking out with their debut singles, thanks to platforms like TikTok and strategic marketing that find the right audience and establish strong connections. Among this new wave of emerging talents is Dxtiny, who made his mark with the viral song ‘Uncle Pele’ from his two-pack single release, which has now individually amassed over six million streams on Spotify alone. He joins this week’s New Music Friday with a fresh record—the tuneful and catchy Babcock. The Afrobeats market thrives on unique melodies, and Babcock is a rock-solid sonic template of sounds that resonate well in the current sonicscape. The track narrates a story of how Dxtiny’s relationship is strained by long distance, as his partner is in Babcock University (a private institution in southwestern Nigeria) while he remains focused on the “grind” in Uyo. Aware of these challenges, he fears their bond is slipping away, but he’s too in love to accept it as fate, choosing instead to fight for her love.

4 Kampé II – Joé Dwèt Filé ft. Burna Boy

Following the widespread success of ‘4 Kampé’, Haitian singer Joé Dwèt Filé has teamed up with Nigerian global icon Burna Boy for the highly anticipated remix, 4 Kampé II. This electrifying collaboration takes the original track to new heights, seamlessly blending Afro-Caribbean and African sounds into a rhythmic masterpiece bursting with energy. As expected, Burna Boy brings his signature charisma, amplifying the track with his deep vocals, magnetic presence, and undeniable energy. Joé Dwèt Filé opens the record, effortlessly gliding between Creole and French, setting the stage for a self-assured and stylish anthem. Burna Boy then steps in, weaving his distinctive mix of English, Pidgin, and French, further expanding the song’s global appeal and reinforcing the bridge between cultures.

At its core, 4 Kampé II is a celebration of confidence and self-assurance, carried by a pulsating beat that commands attention. Its multilingual delivery—Creole, French, English, and Pidgin—creates a rich sonic and cultural exchange, spotlighting the deep ties between Haiti and Nigeria. Behind the scenes, an all-star production team—Aznvr, Joé Dwèt Filé, Natewkeys, and Wligens—curates a soundscape that effortlessly fuses Afrobeats, Kompa, and Dancehall influences, making 4 Kampé II an infectious blend of rhythm and movement.

Mavin Records’ standout talent Crayon makes a return with Bodycon, a brand-new single that effortlessly merges admiration, passion, and smooth Afrobeats vibes. Following his previous release, You featuring Young Jonn, Crayon continues his streak of captivating records, this time placing the spotlight on the irresistible charm of his love interest. On Bodycon, Crayon is completely enraptured by his muse—her radiant melanin, captivating beauty, and graceful form leaving him utterly spellbound. With his signature silky vocals and fluid melodies, he paints a vivid picture of infatuation, expressing his admiration in a rhythmically groovy and infectious manner. Bringing the song to life is Ragee’s impeccable production, delivering a polished and irresistible beat that perfectly complements Crayon’s vocal finesse. Marking his first official single of the year, ‘Bodycon’ sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting musical journey ahead.

Nigerian rap heavyweight Erigga has finally unveiled his highly anticipated album, G.O.A.T, a project that reaffirms his place as one of the most lyrically sharp voices in Nigerian hip-hop. Following the success of his 2023 album Family Time, this latest offering is a bold statement of his greatness, both in skill and influence within the rap scene. Spanning thirteen tracks, G.O.A.T finds Erigga at his lyrical best, tackling the themes that have shaped his career—street life, hustle, money, relationships, and the daily realities of the common man. Known for his raw and unfiltered storytelling, the Warri-born rapper delivers his verses in his signature Pidgin English, making his narratives both relatable and deeply impactful.

The album boasts a stellar lineup of guest features, including rap powerhouse Phyno, street-hop star Bella Shmurda, dynamic duo Ajebo Hustlers, as well as Great Adamz, Kashcpt, Big Klef, and JaQi. Each artist adds a unique element, creating a diverse and engaging listening experience.

From gritty street anthems to introspective reflections on life and ambition, G.O.A.T showcases Erigga’s growth, resilience, and ability to stay true to his roots while evolving with the times.

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper and one of Africa’s most forward-thinking hip-hop artists, M.anifest, has officially unveiled his highly anticipated sixth studio album, New Road & Guava Trees. Released under the esteemed hip-hop label Mass Appeal, the album is a masterclass in genre fusion, blending hip-hop, Afrobeats, and Highlife with intricate storytelling and immersive soundscapes.

New Road & Guava Trees boasts an impressive lineup of collaborators, including Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nigerian Highlife duo The Cavemen, Afropop star King Promise, South African lyricist A-Reece, and Bien of the Kenyan band Sauti Sol.

The album’s title carries both personal and symbolic weight, rooted in M.anifest’s childhood in Madina, Ghana. New Road & Guava Trees is about embracing “new beginnings,” he explains. “I grew up in a part of Madina called New Road, where we had a guava tree that represented growth and fresh starts. This record embodies that journey—overcoming obstacles to reap the fruits of one’s labor.”

Spanning recording sessions in Accra, Seattle, and Los Angeles, the album is the culmination of nearly two years of creative exploration, weaving together diverse influences into a cohesive and profound body of work.

As he gears up for the release of his fifth studio album, 5ive, Davido returns with Be There Still, the third lead single from the project, set to drop on April 18. After teasing the song with a calculated rollout, the Nigerian superstar delivers yet another amapiano-infused track, following in the rhythmic footsteps of his previous releases, Awuke and Funds’.

With three singles already out, Davido’s sonic direction for 5ive is becoming clearer—it’s shaping up to be an amapiano-driven album. Staying true to his signature formula of infectious melodies and anthemic hooks, Be There Still finds him reflecting on his longevity in the music industry. He acknowledges the years he’s put in and asserts his intent to remain a dominant force.

With over a decade at the pinnacle of Nigerian music, Davido radiates a hunger that suggests he’s far from done. On Be There Still he makes one thing certain—his journey is far from over, and there’s still much to achieve.

Ruger — Toro

Ruger kicks off the countdown to his sophomore album with an electrifying performance of his latest single, Toro, on A COLORS SHOW. Commanding the mic with his signature Afro-dancehall energy, he delivers a performance that is as magnetic as it is confident, offering a glimpse of what’s to come from his upcoming project, ‘Blown Boy Ru’.

Produced by longtime collaborator Kukbeatz, Toro seamlessly blends infectious rhythms with Ruger’s smooth vocal delivery, further cementing his reputation as one of Afrobeats’ most dynamic hitmakers. The song weaves a tale of romance with his signature playboy edge, balancing vulnerability with swagger. In lyrics like, “Call me a devil but there’s no angel in this world, truly I vex you, try forgive me just because,” Ruger plays up his bad-boy persona while subtly seeking grace—a dynamic he’s mastered over time.

Kukbeatz’s production amplifies this duality, layering bouncy percussion with melodic undertones, ensuring Toro remains both danceable and emotionally charged. The song marks a crucial moment in Ruger’s career, building momentum for Blown Boy Ru, slated for release in late 2025.

Coming off the success of his 2023 debut album, RU The World, which featured the smash hit Asiwaju (now surpassing 150 million Spotify streams), Ruger continues to push the boundaries of his sound. Since bursting onto the scene under Jonzing World in 2021 and launching his own Blown Boy Entertainment imprint in 2024, he has carved out a distinct lane, fusing Afrobeats vibrancy with dancehall grit.

His COLORS performance captures him in his rawest form—stripped of distractions, exuding effortless charisma.

Wizard Chan — FLAKO (feat. ODUMODUBLVCK)

The Nigerian music scene continues to thrive, and Wizard Chan is adding to its brilliance with his latest single, FLAKO, a high-energy collaboration with ODUMODUBLVCK. Produced by Mr Soul, the track bridges their contrasting styles, merging Wizard Chan’s soulful finesse with ODUMODUBLVCK’s relentless intensity. The result? A bouncy, feel-good anthem that resonates with both meaning and groove.

FLAKO opens with Wizard Chan’s sultry vocals, a staple of his reggae-infused Afro-fusion sound. Known for his ability to fuse futuristic elements with traditional roots, he sets the stage with introspective yet uplifting lyrics. His delivery carries an effortless warmth, drawing listeners in with his heartfelt storytelling.

Then, ODUMODUBLVCK storms in, injecting the song with his signature “Okporoko Rhythms”, a fusion of hip-hop, grime, drill, and Afro-pop. His fiery verse contrasts Wizard Chan’s laid-back charm, creating an electrifying push-and-pull dynamic. His punchy lyricism crackles with streetwise swagger, adding an unpredictable and exhilarating edge to the track.

The production, helmed by Mr Soul, masterfully blends reggae undertones with hip-hop’s crisp percussion, crafting a soundscape that is both danceable and rich in texture. The track balances playfulness with depth, making it an irresistible listen.

Marking Wizard Chan’s first release of 2025, FLAKO teases what’s to come from his forthcoming album, expected later this year. Following the success of his 2024 EP, The Messenger—which housed introspective gems like ‘Mr Sailor Man’—this single signals artistic evolution, proving he’s unafraid to expand his sound.

Tay Iwar, the Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer renowned for his vibrant blend of R&B and Afro-fusion, has unveiled his latest single, Bad Belle, marking his first release of 2025. This track follows his 2024 collaborations, including the second installment of the Gold II EP with Le Mav and the two-pack single Patience & Heart/In Your Absence.

Bad Belle was released unexpectedly, with minimal promotion, yet it has swiftly captivated listeners across streaming platforms. The song spans approximately three minutes, during which Tay Iwar’s meticulous and unique vocals take center stage, delivering a performance that is both soulful and compelling.

The term Bad Belle is Nigerian Pidgin English, often used to describe envy or ill will. In this track, Tay Iwar explores themes of jealousy and negativity, weaving them into a narrative that resonates with authenticity and depth. His ability to infuse personal experiences into his music allows listeners to connect on a profound level, making Bad Belle a testament to his storytelling prowess.

It’s New Music Friday! This week’s releases feature a diverse range of artists and genres. Check out our roundup of the hottest new tracks and discover the music that’s making waves from Ruger, Tyla, Diamond Platnumz On This Week’s New Music Friday.

Why Love — Asake

Asake’s departure from his former label, YBNL, has sparked controversy, with some members of his previous label leveling accusations of misconduct and haughtiness against the star. Months after releasing his third studio album, Lungu Boy, aimed at both domestic and international audiences, Asake terminated his contract with Olamide’s YBNL, removing his past works with the label and debuting a new look. In January, Asake teased a new song while in the studio, sporting his new, somewhat controversial, look, which many deemed ragged. The song, titled “Why Love,” follows his established amapiano template and sounds familiar, perhaps due to the production. Asake’s delivery showcases his masterful singing and lyrical inflection, which would complement various production styles beyond amapiano.

With the release of his first single of the year, as an independent artist under his Giran Republic label, it’s clear that Asake aims to solidify his presence in the global market, particularly in the US. He was recently spotted with India Love, further fueling controversy, and she ultimately appeared as the vixen in the official music video for “Why Love.”

Ruger has a history of starting his music year strong with tracks that resonate with listeners. Kicking off 2024 with a surprise collaboration with Bnxn in February, Ruger’s undeniable talent as an independent artist under his label, Blownboy Ru, continues to demonstrate his growth. With an excellent sense of musicality, Ruger’s delivery seamlessly integrates with any production he encounters, giving his music high replay value throughout his discography. His new single, “Jay Jay,” embodies the stereotypical toxic playboy persona, with lyrics that sparked controversy, particularly on Twitter, shortly after the song was teased. Ruger opens the song with, “If a girl worries me, I delete her, put her inside the bin bag, so why won’t she be bitter.” Many have criticized Ruger’s lyrics, stating they promote the wrong message, especially given the rising rates of femicide in the country.

In “Moyo,” he delivers a passionate performance, blending traditional Tanzanian sounds with contemporary rhythms. The song has quickly gained popularity among his fans due to its emotive lyrics and polished production, highlighting Diamond Platnumz’s signature style and vocal prowess. The track’s poignant lyrics and engaging melody resonate deeply, exploring themes of love and introspection. Diamond Platnumz’s ability to convey emotion through his music is evident, making this a standout addition to his discography. For fans of Bongo Flava and soulful tunes, “Moyo” is a must-listen. Its rich instrumentation and heartfelt delivery make it a valuable addition to any music collection.

In the spirit of love, Nigerian singer and love connoisseur Adekunle Gold celebrates spousal love in his new single, “Obimo.” With his exquisite vocals, Adekunle Gold croons over a groovy production featuring a guitar, masterfully crafted by Ragee. After teasing the song with his wife and mother of his child, Simi, on social media platforms, “Obimo” instantly connected with audiences, who eagerly anticipated its release. While this isn’t the first time Adekunle Gold and Simi have collaborated on a song, “Obimo” reinforces their musical chemistry, whether as co-writers or providing backing vocals on each other’s tracks. “Obimo,” a celebration of enduring spousal love and commitment, highlights relationships and marriages that possibly inspired the record. This is further evidenced in the official music video, which showcases the love between US rapper Tobe Nwigwe and his wife, Martica “Fat.” Adekunle Gold previously appeared on the outro of Tobe’s last studio album, Hood Hymns, which also featured a guest appearance from Odumodublvck.

Push 2 Start Remix – Tyla ft. Sean Paul

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="763" height="765" src="https://afromixx.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_8999.jpeg" alt="Push 2 Start - Tyla ft.
Tyla has enlisted Sean Paul for the remix of her hit, “Push 2 Start.” “Push 2 Start” was originally released in October as one of three new tracks on the deluxe edition of Tyla’s self-titled debut album. It became her second entry on the Billboard Hot 100, following her top 10 smash “Water,” peaking at No. 88 and spending eight weeks atop the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart. This isn’t the first time the South African singer has collaborated with a Jamaican artist. She recorded “Jump” with dancehall star Skillibeng and Gunna on the original version of Tyla. Sean Paul’s verse and ad-libs add depth to the track. The remix evokes a nostalgic feel reminiscent of Beyoncé & Sean Paul’s “Baby Boy.” It will be interesting to see how this performs on the Dancehall charts and how far it propels the song.

Centered on showing unconditional love to her muse, who genuinely deserves it, Ayra Starr masterfully demonstrates in “All The Love” how a Nigerian love ballad should be crafted, infused with a melody that compels repeated listens. In the song, she emphasizes that this person’s beautiful heart is more than enough and deserves unconditional love: “But one thing is certain, I’ll be that person, Wey go be your shoulder, buddy, bestie, anything.” Although it seems this person isn’t receiving deserved, reciprocated love from others, Ayra Starr reassures them of her unwavering support: “You are deserving of the love you are not getting, Independently, I’ll take the liberty, And I go love you specially, oh.“

Behind the glittering success of Nigerian music and Afrobeats lies a history of fierce rivalries, lyrical battles, and public fallouts that have shaped the industry’s competitive spirit. From the legendary disputes of the late ‘90s to the social media-fueled beefs of today, these conflicts have sparked some of the most unforgettable moments in Afrobeats and hip-hop culture.

While some artists eventually buried the hatchet, others let their grudges simmer indefinitely, adding layers to their legacies. This piece revisits the most defining industry clashes and highlights the impact these moments had on their individual careers and Nigerian music as a whole.

Eedris Abdulkareem vs. Tony Tetuila: A Fallout of Former Label Mates

In the late 1990s, The Remedies, comprising Eedris Abdulkareem, Tony Tetuila, and Eddy Remedy, emerged as a formidable force in Nigerian hip-hop. Signed to Kennis Music in 1997, they delivered hits like “Sakomo” and “Judile,” which became anthems of that era. Interestingly, Tetuila joined the group a year after its formation, contributing financially and performing during tours, despite not featuring on their breakout tracks.

Tensions arose when disputes over individual contributions and earnings led to Tetuila feeling marginalized. Accusations of lacking talent prompted his departure and the release of the 1999 diss track “Omode Meta N Sere,” featuring Plantashun Boiz and Ruff Rugged and Raw. The Remedies countered with “Jealousy,” featuring Pasuma.

Tetuila’s solo career soared with the success of “My Car,” a track subtly mocking Eedris Abdulkareem. In response, Eedris released “Oko Omoge” and later targeted Plantashun Boiz in “Wackawikee M.Cs.” Despite the rivalry, both artists enjoyed successful solo careers, with Eedris delivering hits like “Mr Lecturer” and “Jaga Jaga,” while Tetuila released fan favorites such as “Fefe Na Efe” and “E Go Better.” Their feud, while intense, ultimately solidified their individual legacies and underscored the dynamic nature of the Nigerian music scene.

9ice vs. Ruggedman: Betrayal, Lyrics, and Industry Drama

The 2009 release of “Once Bitten Twice Shy” by 9ice ignited rumors of infidelity involving his then-wife, Toni Payne, and fellow artist Ruggedman. Despite public backlash against Ruggedman, 9ice remained silent, leading to strained relations and a series of diss tracks from both parties.

The tension escalated in 2011 when a leaked phone conversation revealed Ruggedman pleading with 9ice to clear his name—a request that went unheeded. By 2015, the feud had cooled, with Ruggedman declaring it over. In January 2016, 9ice publicly apologized, clarifying that the accusations were unfounded and expressing regret for the misunderstanding. This reconciliation showcased the challenges of public perception and the importance of communication in resolving disputes within the industry.

Blackface vs. 2Baba: The Longest Running Beef in Nigerian Music

The origins of the feud between Blackface and 2face Idibia now know as 2Baba trace back to their days as members of the Plantashun Boiz, alongside Faze. After the group’s disbandment in 2004, 2Baba’s solo career took off with the release of “African Queen,” a track that Blackface claimed to have co-written.

Over the years, Blackface accused 2Baba of intellectual property theft, leading to lawsuits and diss tracks. In 2016, 2Baba sued Blackface for defamation, to which Blackface responded with the diss track “War,” accusing 2Baba of sabotaging his career.

In 2019, the two reached an out-of-court settlement, agreeing on royalties for Blackface. Their reconciliation was further solidified in 2021 during a tribute to the late Sound Sultan, where they performed together with Faze, marking the end of their long-standing feud.

Olamide vs. Don Jazzy: The 2015 Headies Showdown

The 2015 Headies Awards became the backdrop for a heated confrontation between YBNL boss Olamide and Mavin Records CEO Don Jazzy. The dispute centered on the ‘Next Rated Award,’ a coveted category featuring nominees like Reekado Banks (Mavin Records) and Lil Kesh (YBNL Nation).

When Reekado Banks was announced as the winner, Olamide, feeling that Lil Kesh was more deserving, took to the stage during Adekunle Gold‘s acceptance speech to voice his displeasure. His passionate outburst, which included explicit language and gestures, stunned the audience and quickly went viral.

Don Jazzy responded during his acceptance speech for the ‘Special Recognition Award,’ addressing Olamide’s comments and suggesting that if Olamide wanted the car prize, he could have it. The exchange ignited a social media frenzy, with fans and celebrities weighing in.

However, within 48 hours, both parties issued a joint statement expressing regret for their actions, accompanied by a reconciliatory photo. Since then, Olamide and Don Jazzy have maintained a cordial relationship.

Tiwa Savage vs. Seyi Shay: A Cold War Turned Heated Showdown

The women of Afrobeats haven’t been left out when it comes to feuds, and one of the most notable tensions in the industry was between Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay. Their rivalry, which brewed for years behind the scenes, finally erupted in public in 2021.

The first signs of bad blood appeared in 2018 when Seyi Shay claimed that Tiwa Savage had used a song she co-wrote, ‘Lova Lova’ (featuring Duncan Mighty), without her knowledge or proper clearance. While Tiwa remained silent on the issue, it was clear that relations between the two had soured.

Things escalated in 2019 during the viral #FvckYouChallenge, a social media trend inspired by Kizz Daniel’s song, where artists dropped their own versions of the track. In her take, Seyi Shay included a pointed line about a female artist who had “tried to block her blessings.” While she didn’t name names, fans quickly linked it to Tiwa, and the tension simmered further.

However, it wasn’t until June 8, 2021, that their long-standing cold war turned into a heated face-off. A chance encounter at a salon in Lekki led to a now-infamous verbal altercation. When Seyi greeted Tiwa, the ‘Somebody’s Son’ singer rejected the gesture, questioning why she would want to be cordial in person after years of alleged sabotage. The argument, caught on video, was filled with explosive accusations and personal digs, with Tiwa famously saying, “God should take my child if I have ever done or said anything bad about you.“

Despite the dramatic clash, no official reconciliation has occurred. Their feud remains one of Afrobeats’ most intense, marked by unspoken tension and a lack of collaboration, making it unlikely that fans will see them on the same stage anytime soon.

M.I vs. Vector: A Battle for Rap Supremacy

The feud between M.I Abaga and Vector Da Viper is one of Nigerian hip-hop’s most iconic rap battles. While both artists had long been considered elite lyricists, their rivalry simmered for years before exploding into full-fledged diss tracks.

The tension between the two dates back to the late 2000s, but it became more apparent in the 2010s when comparisons between them intensified. Vector, known for his razor-sharp flows and street-bred lyricism, often alluded to industry gatekeeping, while M.I, the self-proclaimed “Chairman,” was widely regarded as a powerhouse who shaped Nigerian rap’s modern era.

Things escalated in 2018 when M.I dropped The Martell Cypher alongside Blaqbonez, A-Q, and Loose Kaynon, taking shots at unnamed rappers. Vector fired back with ‘The Purge‘ in 2019, directly challenging M.I’s credibility. M.I responded with ‘The Viper‘, a calculated, introspective diss that painted Vector as bitter and envious. In retaliation, Vector released ‘Judas the Rat‘, where he questioned M.I’s integrity, his role in the industry, and his business dealings.

The feud sparked widespread debate, dividing fans between those who admired M.I’s controlled and structured lyricism and those who appreciated Vector’s raw and aggressive style. In the end, both artists cemented their places in rap history. By 2020, they publicly squashed their beef, performing together and hinting at possible collaborations.

The M.I vs. Vector battle remains one of Nigeria’s most significant rap feuds.

Burna Boy vs. Davido: A Clash of Egos and Supremacy

In the global Afrobeats conversation, the “Big 3” debate often centers around Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy. But while Wizkid has largely stayed out of direct confrontations, the tension between Davido and Burna Boy has been particularly explosive.

Their relationship began on a friendly note, with Burna Boy making a cameo in Davido’s ‘Dami Duro’ video back in 2011. They supported each other’s careers for years, with Davido even attending Burna Boy’s 2018 Lagos concert. However, by 2020, things took a sharp turn.

Burna Boy, who had become increasingly vocal about his dominance in the industry, began making claims that many perceived as shots at Davido. In May 2020, Davido posted a now-famous photo of himself and Wizkid, captioned “The 2 greatest of all time, no cap.” Burna Boy appeared to take offence, later tweeting cryptic messages about “family money” and “buying success,” which fans interpreted as a dig at Davido, whose father is a billionaire businessman.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="DAVIDO TALKS ABOUT HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH BURNA BOY AND WIZKID.

The tension escalated into music, with Burna Boy allegedly shading Davido on ‘Way Too Big’ and ‘Real Life’ from his Grammy award-winning ‘Twice As Tall’, while Davido fired back with ‘FEM’, an anthemic clapback that rode on the wave of the End SARS protests.

In December 2020, their rivalry turned physical when reports emerged that they had a scuffle at a Ghanaian nightclub. While neither addressed the altercation directly, Davido hinted at the beef in a social media post, writing, “I go leave this music for una.”

By 2023, their rivalry flared up again when Davido, in an interview with Brut Afrique, referred to Burna Boy as a “new cat.” Burna responded subtly, refusing to engage directly, but his fans took it as further proof that their cold war was still alive.

Despite their ongoing differences, there’s always a chance for reconciliation. However, with neither side backing down, the rivalry continues to fuel conversations in Afrobeats, keeping fans engaged and debates heated.

BNXN vs. Ruger: The Streaming and Talent Debate

In mid-2022, a rivalry emerged between rising stars BNXN (formerly Buju) and Ruger. The tension began when Ruger dismissed BNXN’s success, claiming it was reliant on collaborations rather than solo efforts. This sparked a series of heated exchanges on social media, with both artists defending their artistry and achievements.

The feud reached a pivotal moment when BNXN won the ‘Next Rated Award‘ at the Headies, a category in which both were nominated. In his acceptance speech, BNXN addressed Ruger with a cheeky remark, adding fuel to the rivalry. Ruger seemingly responded with his hit track ‘Asiwaju,’ widely interpreted as a diss record.

Surprisingly, in 2024, the two artists collaborated on the single ‘RMD’ and subsequently released a joint EP titled ‘RnB’. This partnership marked a significant turning point, suggesting that their previous disputes may have been either resolved or strategically utilized to generate publicity.

Odumodublvck vs. Prettyboy D-O: The Street-Hop and Alté Worlds Collide

The feud between Nigerian rappers Odumodublvck and Prettyboy D-O offered a unique clash between two artists from different ends of Nigeria’s evolving hip-hop scene. While Odumodublvck represents the grittier, street-driven side of rap, Prettyboy D-O has been a long-standing figure in Nigeria’s alté movement. Their paths initially seemed to align, with Odumodublvck expressing admiration for D-O in past tweets, but 2024 saw their relationship turn sour.

In January 2024, Odumodublvck fired off a series of tweets accusing an unnamed artist of manipulating streaming numbers. Though he didn’t mention anyone directly, fans quickly speculated that he was referring to Prettyboy D-O, whose Spotify streams didn’t seem to match up with his Apple Music rankings.

Prettyboy D-O responded with a cryptic post of his own, warning Odumodublvck not to let a “man without talent” (a suspected jab at Native Records co-founder Teezee) stir up unnecessary conflict between them. The feud intensified when Odumodublvck accused D-O of calling him a “clone,” which D-O denied, shifting the blame to Chubbz, another Native co-founder.

Chubbz then stepped into the mix, claiming that Native Records had passed on signing Prettyboy D-O in the past due to weak demos. This added another layer of tension to the dispute, making it a full-blown rap beef that divided fans across social media.

Despite the online back-and-forth, a video later surfaced showing Odumodublvck, Prettyboy D-O, and Teezee hanging out together, signalling that whatever feud existed had been put to rest. But the drama still gave fans one of the most memorable viral moments of the year: Odumodublvck’s fiery rant, which has become a viral meme in and beyond the music world—“Nor be all this cho cho cho! Show working! Show working! We put our blood on this P!”

Wizkid vs. Davido: The Decade-Long Rivalry That Defined Afrobeats

If there’s one feud that has defined modern Afrobeats, it’s the on-and-off rivalry between Wizkid and Davido. The tension between these two titans has spanned over a decade, blending professional competition, fan wars, and occasional moments of reconciliation.

The origins of their rivalry trace back to 2014, when Wizkid, fresh off a successful U.S. tour, tweeted about performing at “proper venues.” Davido responded with a now-deleted post, suggesting Wizkid was being shady. From there, things escalated, with both artists taking subliminal shots at each other in interviews and music.

In 2017, Wizkid famously called Davido’s voice a “frog voice,” sparking another wave of tension. Yet, in 2018, they shocked fans by performing together at each other’s concerts, momentarily burying the hatchet.

However, their relationship has remained unpredictable. In 2020, Wizkid ignored Davido’s ‘A Better Times’ album release, fueling speculation of lingering beef. But in a show of respect, Wizkid postponed his ‘More Love, Less Ego’ album drop in 2022 following the tragic passing of Davido’s son.

In 2023, Wizkid announced a joint tour with Davido, signaling reconciliation. But by 2024, the rivalry appeared to be alive again, with fan bases—Wizkid FC and 30BG—keeping the competition intense.

From quotable disses (“Dem nor dey hear your gbedu again”) to viral memes (“Osakpolor”), the Wizkid vs. Davido saga continues to shape Afrobeats history.

In a remarkable achievement for Nigerian music, Ruger’s “Asiwaju” earns Gold Certification in France. A worthy accolade that highlights Ruger’s growing influence on the global music scene and also the increasing recognition of Afrobeats worldwide.

Achieving Gold status is no simple feat if you are wondering. To earn this, a song must sell at least 500,000 units across various formats, including digital downloads and physical sales, and that is just what Ruger’s “Asiwaju” has done in the country of France. “Asiwaju” reaching this milestone is a clear indication of its popularity and the strong connection it has made with listeners.

The certification reflects the expanding reach of Afrobeats, as well as Ruger’s success and a growing appreciation for his talent.

Released in 2022, “Asiwaju” has become a defining track for Ruger. Its catchy melody and relatable lyrics also contributed to its widespread appeal, making it a favorite among fans both in Nigeria and abroad.

Ruger’s Gold certification has been celebrated across various platforms, and this recognition not only boosts Ruger’s profile but also highlights the collective achievements of Nigerian artists in the global music landscape.

There’s no doubt that Ruger is still on his way to doing exploits, and music lovers can’t wait to see what next he will be dishing out.

The weekend has arrived, and as the rhythm of daily life slows down, it’s time to switch gears and hit play on this week’s freshest music drops. From surprise collaborations to long-anticipated singles, the artists have delivered a blend of bangers perfect for your playlist. Whether you’re prepping for a night out or just chilling at home, this New Music Friday has something to set the tone right. Here’s a curated list of new releases that you’ll want to put on repeat as you unwind and kickstart your weekend.

Wizkid — Kese (Dance)

Ahead of his highly anticipated album dropping in just one week, Wizkid releases “Dance,” a track teased earlier at his London listening party for the album’s lead single, “Piece of My Heart.” The neo-fuji record, produced by P2J, brings an upbeat, danceable groove and stands in stark contrast to his mellow October release. As fans count down to Wizkid’s seventh studio album, they can look forward to a diverse mix of genres, showcasing the artist’s extensive range honed over a decade in the music scene.

The track’s irresistible rhythm and catchy melody make it a repeat-worthy listen, reigniting the magic these two artists create together. It’s a record that leaves fans pondering why it took four years for this much-anticipated reunion.

Ruger’s impressive run this year—his joint project with bnxn, a 2-pack single two months after, and multiple feature runs—continues with “Toma Toma,” featuring afropop queen Tiwa Savage. The duo delivers on a Brazilian funk-inspired production layered with East African influences. Tiwa Savage’s tender yet powerful voice perfectly complements Ruger’s energetic style, evoking memories of her iconic collaborations while adding a fresh spin to the track’s dynamic beat.
