But just as the foundation for a sustained “Afrobeats to the World” era was being laid, recent trends point to a creeping decline. The numbers aren’t as promising, the buzz is thinning out, and the genre’s once-prominent global momentum appears to be stalling.

At the root of this slowdown lies a complex web of issues, from an underdeveloped industry structure at home to inconsistent international infrastructure. However, one of the more subtle yet significant problems is Afrobeats’ ongoing struggle with identity. A genre that blends elements of hip-hop, dancehall, R&B, highlife, and more. Afrobeats was always destined to be fluid—but its refusal (or inability) to define itself clearly has become a roadblock on its global path. At the height of the movement, everything seemed aligned. Burna Boy had “Ye” and the Grammy-winning ‘Twice As Tall’, CKay’s “Love Nwantiti” broke into North American charts, Tems pushed deeper into the U.S. market following her collaboration on Wizkid’s “Essence”, and Rema went global with “Calm Down”.

The West was curious, eager to understand this vibrant sound. But when asked what Afrobeats truly is, there was no consensus. Artists offered vague, shifting answers, often shaped by personal branding rather than collective identity. Many distanced themselves from the label altogether, coining their own genres like ‘Afro-fusion”, “Afro-rave”, or even “Afro-depression"—attempts to individualize their sound while escaping the ‘Afrobeats’ box.

In contrast, genres like reggae, for example, are not just musical styles, they're extensions of cultural identity. Reggae is synonymous with the Jamaican experience. It’s more than sound; it is language, philosophy, and lifestyle. Meanwhile, global Afrobeats artists seem to champion personal expressions over communal representation. That’s not inherently bad, but without a defined core, what exactly is the world being asked to embrace?

The genre’s identity confusion has been worsened by the public remarks of its biggest stars. In a now-notorious interview with Apple Music, Burna Boy claimed that Afrobeats is "mostly about nothing" and lacks substance. Wizkid has also distanced himself from the genre, stating he can make music in any style and doesn’t consider himself bound to the Afrobeats label. These statements—however true to the artist's intent—undermine the genre’s cohesion, especially in the eyes of a global audience trying to make sense of it all.

Davido once half-joked that the only difference between Afrobeat and Afrobeats is “the ‘s’.” And while Afro B later helped clarify the historical and stylistic distinctions, the fact remains: when the world asked us who we are, we often replied with confusion, self-interest, or vague humour.

This identity problem reared its head again at the 2024 MTV VMAs, where South African singer Tyla won Best Afrobeats for “Water”—a track rooted more in Amapiano than anything traditionally West African. While Tyla graciously used the moment to highlight that not all African music is Afrobeats, the damage was already done. Critics argued that “Water” had Afrobeats elements, but the larger point lingered: the term is being stretched beyond recognition.

How can a genre be exported successfully if its creators resist clear definition, its industry lacks structure, and its biggest stars often reject its label?

The truth is, the Afrobeats movement wasn’t built on a strong foundation. You can’t build a house from the roof down. Without solid categorisation, internal consensus, and cultural framing, global interest will eventually plateau. And now, the cracks are beginning to show.

The post-modern Afrobeats phase, which was once a rallying cry—"Afrobeats to the World"—is starting to sound more like a question than a declaration. Unless stakeholders (artists, producers, journalists, and audiences) can agree on what Afrobeats truly is and what it represents, its world domination may remain a dream deferred.

The song gained momentum after Shallipopi previewed a snippet on social media; fans began creating content and memorising lyrics even before the DSP release. When it officially dropped, Shallipopi delivered an even stickier second verse, showcasing his knack for catchy lyrics and hooks. Laho rides danceable keys and percussive bounce, propelled by Shallipopi’s playful delivery. It hit No. 1 on Apple Music Nigeria, peaked at No. 57 on the UK Official Chart, and amassed over 32 million global streams with 1.2 million Shazams. Viral TikTok trends—from makeup transitions to choreographed steps and travel vlogs—cemented its summer anthem status.

Shake It to the Max (Fly) – Moliy ft. Silent Addy, Shenseea, Skillibeng

In a year where Moliy had seemingly taken a break from music, a simple snippet of "Shake It to the Max (Fly)" blossomed into the biggest song of her career yet. Although the track went viral before its release, Moliy didn’t rush it; she chose instead to let the song gain a life of its own. Beginning with a dance—simple, repeated rotation of one's waist to the dancehall-house fusion—the sound soon became bigger than TikTok. The "Shake It to the Max (Fly)" effect was tickling, and the song and accompanying dance instantly went viral. On TikTok, more than 235,000 videos have been made under the sound, with over a million Spotify streams, a top 20 placement on the UK Afrobeats Chart, and a remix featuring dancehall stars Shenseea and Skillibeng released on Feb. 21.

"My Darling" is a musical masterpiece by West African act Chella that resonates with a global audience, thanks to its rhythmic arrangement and siren-like melody. A love song with acoustic softness, “My Darling” showcases Chella’s tender vocal tone over sticky melodies and Afrobeats percussion. Upon release, "My Darling" burnt through social media platforms like wildfire, enveloping every listener in its path. It landed as a dance offering, and that physical groove—not necessarily the lyrics—was what stuck with listeners. The song was crowned No. 1 on Nigeria’s Top 100, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats chart, and held the top title on Shazam’s global chart, becoming the fourth Nigerian song to reach that height. With over 2.2M TikTok videos and heartfelt lyric-interpretation clips, its tuneful and emotional resonance is undeniable; it's a perfect companion for slow sunsets or warm night drives.

CIZA’s "Isaka (6AM)" has experienced huge success in South Africa and beyond as one of the finest entries in the emerging 3-Step wave—a South African genre that blends Amapiano, Afro House, and Deep House. The lush and rhythmic track is anchored by mellow house chords, log drums, a three-kick drum pattern, and soft chants of “Isaka la vuka eh” that speak to sunrise chillouts. It has clocked over 1Million daily streams on South Africa’s Spotify chart for more than a month and reached No. 1 on iTunes SA. TikTok creators have kept its serene groove alive with scenic visuals. "Isaka (6AM)" is tailor-made for early morning reflections and solo drives before the city wakes.

Bout U – Rema

"Bout U" revisits earlier glimpses of this side of Rema seen on his debut album, Rave & Roses, except now, they’re refined Afro-R&B offerings distilled for a more inclusive global audience. It’s soft Afro-R&B, simmering with 80s guitar nostalgia and heartfelt sincerity.
The track opens with an electric guitar riff that immediately lights up the listener’s ears and sets the tone before a love-consumed Rema serenades his muse with an uncanny delivery of desire and devotion. Shaolin is a rolling and thumping slapper off street-hop luminary Seyi Vibez’s latest EP, Children of Africa. The vibes-heavy track is a strong blend of street-pop and Afro-pop anthems, with commanding vocals and a catchy hook—perfect for lifting any summer mood.
The music video, shot by visionary TG Omori, brought every thump and pulse to life with the same energetic expression the song carries. "Shaolin" debuted at No. 1 on Nigeria’s Official Top 100 with over 6.8M streams and 63M radio impressions. It also cracked the UK Afrobeats Top 10, cementing its place as one of the summer’s most energetic local bangers.

Uzizwa Kanjani – Jazzworx, Mawhoo, Thukutela, GL_Ceejay

Jazzworx’s "Uzizwa Kanjani" is a borderline dance record that blends warm Amapiano rhythms with evocative lyrics about emotional state and introspection. It debuted at No. 9 on South Africa’s Spotify Weekly Chart (433K+ streams), hitting a No. 1 streaming peak for Jazzworx.

Whether as an individual or a featured artist, one thing we haven't lacked this year is the hit songs that keep coming back to back.

From the beginning of January, we have been jamming to fire tracks from our favorites and some of these tracks have been collaborations.

It's always nice when two or more artists can come together and make magic in the studio. From Nigerian superstars teaming up with global icons to African artists using music as a means of uniting Africa, 2024 has really seen an increase in Afrobeats, Highlife, and Amapiano collaborations that push the genre’s boundaries. From rising stars like Brown Joel, Hyce, and TitoM to global superstars such as Davido, Burna Boy, Tyla, and Skepta, collaborations this year have been elite.

So let's go ahead and highlight some of the top Afrobeats collaborations of 2024 so far.

TitoM x Burna Boy x Yuppe x S.N.E – Tshwala Bam (Remix)

Beginning our list is the catchy Amapiano song, Tshwala Bam by TitoM, Burna Boy, Yuppe, and S.N.E.

The song had almost everyone doing the Tshwala Bam dance trend, watching the videos, and singing at the top of their voices, even though most of them didn't even know the lyrics, but it was so enjoyable to dance and sing along to. Despite new trends coming up, it is still obvious that the Tshawala Bam craze isn't over yet.

JAE5 x Portable x Skepta - Tony Montana

Possibly the most unexpected collaboration of the year, JAE5 teamed up with the Portable and the Grime legend, Skepta, for this hit track, he titled it Tony Montana.

Portable brought that street-to-mansion flow we all love to hear, and Skepta didn't disappoint as he dished out fire bars. Music lovers didn't hesitate to jump on it on different social media platforms and create a trend out of it.

Asake x Central Cee - Wave

Released as the lead single for his "Lungu Boy" album, Asake teamed up with U.K Drill rapper Central cee as they delivered one heck of the track they titled "Wave." Asake's soulful vocals blended so well with Central Cee's energetic rap. The song features catchy hooks, infectious beats, and a laid-back & chill vibe which show how much chemistry, style, and versatility both artist have as a duo. It's a superb collaboration in the Afrobeats scene.

Tyla x Gunna x Skillibeng - Jump

The ninth track on Tyla's self titled debut album, Jump blends Afrobeats, hip-hop, and dancehall for an energetic vibe. Tyla’s infectious vocals, Gunna’s smooth flow, and Skillibeng’s Jamaican flair create a unique combination which makes the song more appealing to a wider audience. The song is a high-energy track that Tyla uses to celebrate her culture, her city Johannesburg, her rise to fame, confidence, and living life to the fullest.

Boypee x Hyce x Brown Joel - Ogechi

As long as you are on different social media platforms, you definitely came across the Ogechi song by rising stars Boypee, Hyce, and Brown Joel. A love song filled with so much Highlife vibes from the Eastern part of Nigeria, Ogechi is a soulful track that celebrates love and divine blessings. With smooth melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and vibrant rhythms, it was so heartwarming listening as all three artist perfectly blended their voices seamlessly, and delivered a captivating rhythm that listeners can relate to.

Diamond Platnumz x Jason Derulo x Khalili Harrison x Chley Nkosi - Komasava Remix

If the original track was a big hit, then the remix to Diamond Platnumz's Komasava was an even bigger hit and internet sensation. When you mix Diamond Platnumz's energy, bongo flava vibes, and dance moves with Jason Derulo's energy, flair, soothing vocals, the end product is going to be nothng short of magic, and that is what the track Komasava became as it amassed 1 million views on Youtube in just 14 hours. Music lovers are still eating up this track as much as they can.

King Promise x Shallipopi - Continental

It is no news that whenever Ghana and Nigeria combine for whatever production in the entertainment world as a whole, it is always going to be a hit, and this time, that was exactly the case with Ghana's melodious King Promise teaming Nigeria's sensation Shallipopi on this track Continental.

The second track from his debut album titled True to Self, King Promise delivers a melodious tune and Shallipopi doesn't disappoint as he gives off so much energy and rhythm in his verse as well, making the track one that would have music listener putting it on repeat.

Ruger x BNXN - POE

It was a surprise when fans learnt Ruger and Bnxn were collaborating on a song after their internet beef in 2022, and it was an even bigger surprise to know they had a whole EP titled RnB ready to our ears with.

One of the biggest tracks on the EP is POE. A smooth Afro-fusion track that blends pleasant melodies with vibrant beats. The song's themes are on love, success, and confidence, as both artists bring their different styles. Ruger’s dynamic vocals and Bnxn’s soulful delivery create an infectious tune to keep listeners singing along and moving.

Kizz Daniel x Davido - Twe Twe Remix

Flyboi and popular hitmaker Kizz Daniel is known for delivering tunes that keep playing in your head for years and have you dancing wherever you hear it, and this time, he enlisted global superstar Davido on the remix of his hit song Twe Twe.

As expected, Davido delivered a fire verse that had everyone singing along when it came up. Kizz Daniel and Davido have collaborated a few other times, and this is one of those songs that don't fall short when they collaborate. Kizz Daniel and Davido have established that they are an elite duo when they work together.

Darkoo x Rema - Favorite Girl Remix

Social media platforms were already going crazy with the release of Darkoo's Favorite Girl. It had its trend on social media and had parties lit, but that was the beginning. With Rema jumping on the remix, it gave the track more fire, trends, and plays too. As of this moment, it is still topping charts and getting more parties turnt up.

"Wadibusa" —Uncle Waffles, Royal MusiQ, OHP Sage, Pcee

Uncle Waffles is no stranger to viral moments, and "Wadibusa" is another notch on her belt. Amapiano thrives on groove, and the collective force of Royal MusiQ, OHP Sage, and Pcee ensured the track has not only been a dancefloor anthem but also gained massive traction on TikTok. It's the kind of track that burns slow and steady, turning into a staple at both club sets and social media feeds.

"Stubborn" – Victony ft. Asake

Lead tracks often hint at what a project is about to offer and sometimes what it sounds like. When Victony dropped the titular track "Stubborn" featuring Asake, it was instantly clear that this would be a contender for collaboration of the year. The song blends Victony’s melodic touch with Asake’s streetwise grit, melancholic lyrics, and delivery. The track that highlights the strength of human resilience quickly found a place in listeners playlists. TikTok challenges exploded as users embraced the song’s rebellious theme. On platforms like Spotify, it boasts over 22 million streams and further reinforces Asake and Victony’s domination in Afrobeats this year.

Benin Boys - Rema ft. Shallipopi

It appeared the Ravage EP era was some sort of prequel to a more creatively sinister phase and Rema’s sophomore album, ‘HEIS’. Built on elements of punk rock and afrobeats, the homecoming album heralded a shift from a popular but now drab sound with its first lead single, ‘Benin Boys’. The track was appropriate as a lead single and in choice of collaboration with Shallipopi, who is from the same hometown as Rema. Benin Boys is Rema’s idea of upraising Benin City and putting it on the map. He undeniably accomplishes that with Benin Boys and ultimately the ‘HEIS’ album, and his homecoming event in Benin City last month is a testament.

"Last Heartbreak"Song"—Ayra Starr, Giveon

When Ayra Starr teamed up with Giveon, it was the merging of two soulful worlds. "Last Heartbreak Song" is both a melancholy anthem and a streaming heavyweight. Ayra’s soulful vocals paired with Giveon’s smooth R&B deep tones gave the song a cross-continental appeal. The track effortlessly cuts across Afrobeat and R&B fans, pulling in millions of streams in just weeks.

"Favorite Story" – King Promise, Sarkodie, Olivetheboy

This Afrobeat collaboration was a celebration of Ghanaian music, featuring three of the country's biggest stars. “Favorite Story” appeals to the softer side of afropop, and its commercial success reflects the emotional connection fans have made with it. "Favorite Story" has enjoyed massive streams from the jump, and fans on socials have given the track a second life with storytelling challenges. The music video, featuring stunning visuals and a star-studded cast, further contributed to the song's success.

"MMS" – Asake ft. Wizkid 

Asake has had a stellar run, and teaming up with Wizkid was bound to unleash magic. The brooding "MMS" quickly found its way onto streaming platforms’ top charts, with Apple Music Nigeria showing it as its No. 1 spot contender for weeks. This is entirely not a surprising feat considering it’s Wizkid, but the majority expected a different direction, one that leaned into what the soundscape has produced over the past year. However, they were disappointed in a good way.

"My Dealer" – Kaestyle ft. Omah Lay

"My Dealer" by Kaestyle and Omah Lay was always destined for heavy rotation. Following the success of the OG track, Kaestyle teamed up with Omah Lay to add magic to an already magical record and to have it poised for a bigger commercial success. Kaestyle’s deep vocals mixed with Omah Lay’s intoxicating style made this song a streaming giant. The moody, mellow energy of the record latched onto whoever it came in contact with, earning it millions of plays across DSPs. 

"JUJU"—Smur  Lee, Odumodublvck, Shallipopi 

This trio on "JUJU" is as gritty as it gets. Smur Lee’s “JUJU” as a sound already garnered a large attention and reception with Tik Tok users, but in the process, Odumodublvck fell in love with the sound and decided to make it into a listenable song, which was a genius idea. Not only in Nigeria alone, but in Africa in general. It is a common knowledge that the negros are somehow musically inclined. That musical inclination, however, seem to be occurring tripple fold in the bloods of certain specified people. Are these people just innately talented? Or are they outliers who had access to certain advantages which made them a master of their craft. In clear terms, what we are trying to do is paint a picture of the possible cause(s) of the Nigerian music ingenuity. 

The Nigerian music industry is being the case study here, because it appears to be the most popular industry in Africa, with a catalogue of global superstars, who seem to be taking the world on a roll at the moment. Dishing out a dose of the Africanness through sound, and conquering the world tour by tour, hits by hits, and ultimately country by country. Before moving to the case study, we will first look at the Historical factors that might have influenced the Africa’s musical know how

African musical talents have been shaped by a rich tapestry of historical factors that span centuries. One of the most significant influences is the continent's deep-rooted tradition of oral storytelling and communal participation in music. For centuries, music has been an integral part of African culture, serving as a medium for storytelling, religious ceremonies, and social rituals. Drumming, singing, and dancing were not only forms of entertainment but also essential components of communication and cultural expression. The Church has faced significant criticism from modern Africans due to various controversial issues. These include an excessive focus on profit-making, the desecration of its sanctity, and inadequate religious teachings. As a result, Africans or Nigerians seem to have a huge magnifying glass on the churches today. 

However, despite the criticisms leveled against churches, it is important to acknowledge their role in being a makeshift musical academies for young people. They provide valuable opportunities for musical education and development that might otherwise be inaccessible.

The musical departments within churches embrace young individuals and teach them the fundamental theories and principles of music. This training equips them to navigate and comprehend the intricacies of the music ecosystem. The church imparts this foundational knowledge, which these individuals often carry into the secular music world, where they subsequently flourish. Undoubtedly, without this vital influence, many of today's preeminent Afrobeats superstars might not exist. Here are example of people who religion or the Church influenced into music

Síkírù Àyìndé  Barrister

Barrister was not groomed in a church, but his sound and musical success was influenced by an Islamic tradition in Nigeria. “During the 1960s in post-independence Nigeria, Síkírù Àyìndé Barrister (1948-2010) pioneered and coined the term fújì, a Yorùbá genre of popular dance music. He transformed wéré/ajísari music, songs performed by and for Muslims during the Ramadan fast, into this new style of dance music.” Wéré/Ajísari was a type of music Muslims performed to wake each other for Sahur — the early morning feast during Ramadan period.

Timaya

Timaya revealed during an interview that he started from church before starting up as a backup for Eedris Abdulkareem. It happened that Timaya eventually became a mentor for Africa’s biggest artist, Burna Boy. 

Wizkid

The Starboy began singing at the age of 11 in church before rebranding to 'Wizkid' in 2006. From there, he took the Nigerian sound International, and became the most decorated African musician of his generation.

Don Jazzy

One of the top producers in the Nigerian music industry, and Mavin Records boss was a multi-instrumentalist in church. This informed his dexterity at music production. Years down the line, Don Jazzy had contributed to the success of Icons like Wande Coal, D’banj, and currently some of the biggest Afrobeats acts in 2024, Rema & Ayra Starr. In 2024, Don jazzy sold majority stake of his label, Mavin Records to Universal Music Group (UMG), one of the world's largest music companies in the world

Wande Coal

Music star, Wande Coal started singing in the teenage choir at his church. Years later he signed to Mo’hits records and went on to inspire a lot of new school afrobeats acts.

There are numerous examples of superstars that could still be mentioned. The likes of Terry G, Ruger, Waje, Cobhams Asuquo, Chidinma; And Producers like MasterKraft, Blaizebeats, and many others also had their musical journey shaped by the Church

Even till date, the church continues to nurture talents; indirectly adding to the value of our industry. Despite all the negatives, this is part of the positives that we can thank religion and the church for.
