A growing wave of Afrobeats and Afro-R&B stars are publicly embracing emotional openness. Their music has always held hints of heartbreak and longing, but now the vulnerability is seeping into their visual language: posing, styling, and aesthetics. For fans raised on rigid expectations of manhood, especially across Africa, this softness reads as polarizing. To some, it’s liberation; to others, it’s uncomfortable territory, borderline effeminate, unfamiliar, and threatening to the traditional mold.

Beyond the Music

But this generation is refusing to let the music do all the talking. They’re extending the vulnerability into how they show up. Painted nails. Plaited hair. Multiple piercings. Shirtless portraits with more emotion than bravado. What used to be uncharted territory, even in the creative space, has become a bold canvas for self-expression.

Rema sits firmly at the forefront of this shift. As an African popstar moving through global spaces, his magazine spreads are built around a fluid, almost androgynous creative direction—open shirts, soft lighting, sensual posturing. He leans into it confidently, with that signature “I’m not explaining myself” aura. His magazine covers; i-D, British Vogue, L’Officiel read like devotional art: oiled skin catching soft light, eyelids dusted with shimmer, and black lacquer on every nail.

Blaqbonez and his long-time-ago septum-piercing look saw him embrace an even bolder aesthetic for his modelling debut for Vivienne Westwood—plaited hair, loud earrings, and subtle lipstick as he waltzed the runway.

Omah Lay, who’s always played between introspection and edge, recently stirred conversation when he posted half-nude photos on his Instagram story. The reactions were loud and revealing. Female fans mostly indulged it, but male fans questioned it, criticised it, or tried to moralise it. What the moment exposed was shock and the tension between old expectations of masculinity and the artists rewriting that script in real time.

More of these male pop figures are adding more piercings to the ones they already had, opting for fitter T-shirts, and even experimenting with crop tops.

Authenticity or Audience Play?

One lingering question is whether these portrayals are genuine expressions or strategic alignments with Western audiences, spaces where fluid masculinity is widely accepted and often celebrated.

But the truth likely sits in the middle, global visibility encourages experimentation, while personal evolution pushes these artists toward freer modes of expression. Their art is growing, their worldview is widening, and their image is following suit. Even if some of it is deliberate branding, it doesn’t negate the authenticity behind the shift.

What It Means for the Fans

For fans, especially young African men, this new masculinity challenges old teachings. It pushes them to interrogate why softness feels uncomfortable, why self-expression has limits, and why vulnerability is seen as weakness. On the flip side, it offers a kind of liberation: permission to feel more, dress freely, and express without apology.

A Cultural Tension Worth Watching

Africa, with its deep traditional structures, is not the easiest place for this evolution. But Afropop/Afrobeats has always been a cultural disruptor. The rise of a more fluid masculinity might just be another chapter in how the genre bends, breaks, and rebuilds the norms around it.

The new masculinity in Afropop is neither wholly imported nor purely indigenous. It is a hybrid born from global exposure, personal expression, and the simple realization that softness can be power. 

Whether this moment expands the definition of African manhood or merely creates another marketable costume, only the next generation of fans and artists will decide. For now, it’s about acknowledging a shift, one that’s reshaping how African male pop stars show up in the world.

This new EP sees the return of Gabzy’s alter ego, Malone—a toxic side of him that contrasts the lover boy persona—slipping out on tracks like “After Summer”, while a deeply vulnerable delivery emerges on a song like “Patience”.

The 16-minute EP opens with the partly acoustic “New Body”, produced by Jester Beats and APGoKrazy. Gabzy specifically dedicates this one to the newly improved physique of his muse, describing her as a “work of art” and a “diamond in the rough”. The production on “New Body” transitions into the groove of a drum set, with the guitar now serving as a backdrop that allows Gabzy to confess how intensely he’s attracted to the physique of his muse. The EP picks up with the groovier AoD and The Elements-produced “So Much Sense” featuring Fireboy DML, which matches the flirtatious and non-committal vibe the track aims for. It paints a good time, fuelled by everything a summer party into the night offers.

Maintaining a similar upbeat tempo, the EP progresses into the introspective “So Easy”, where Gabzy reflects on personal struggles, betrayal, and success accompanied by gratitude. On the fourth track, “Patience”, he is more emotional and sombre, at the verge of losing someone he deeply loves, and so he pleads with her to be patient with him. The masterful production by Le Mav conveys an equally emotive essence, reinforcing the vulnerability Gabzy intends to pass on to listeners.

“After Summer” finds Gabzy in a self-inflicted heartache, triggered by the commitment issues also evidenced in earlier releases like “As Friends”. Yet through it all, he admits he’s the problem, and while his heart may want her, his body will chase another feeling. He closes ‘It’s Not You, It’s Summer’ with the light-hearted yet flirtatious “So Special” featuring Victony, on a niche subject matter he effortlessly thrives in.

Tyla — WWP (We Wanna Party) [EP]

Tyla’s music journey has witnessed a jaw-dropping meteoric rise, diligently supported by her talents from the start of her career—in the form of smash singles and her 2023 debut album ‘TYLA’, which was followed by a deluxe in 2024. Preceded by two lead singles and a listening party that conveys the essence of her newly released pop EP ‘We Wanna Party‘, Tyla reminds fans with the 4-track project why she’s the globally preferred pop star from Africa, and how long she intends to fill the shoes.
Across four tracks—“Bliss”, “Is It”, “Mr Media”, and “Dynamite”—Tyla blends the sensual leanings of R&B with Amapiano drums and the soft rebellion of pop’s next wave. The production across the EP is bright and bouncy, but still sharp.
Standout “Dynamite”, which, according to Tyla, was recorded in 2022, brings in Wizkid for a flirtatious back-and-forth with an energetic and assured delivery. “Dynamite” showcases a chemistry born from a blend of Wizkid’s punchy energy and Tyla’s mellow glide. “Your body bang like dynamite” might sound like a TikTok hook waiting to happen, but the record carries more sonic weight than gimmick.
On Mr Media, Tyla switches pace and tone, addressing critics with sharp wit and calculated softness. It’s a flex, but one wrapped in clean production and deliberate confidence.
‘WWP’ is exactly what Tyla curated it to be: an upbeat, party groove crafted by the soul of a South African who understands the heritage of her home.

Asake ft. Tiakola — BADMAN GANGSTA

Asake has entered his jet-set global villain arc, and BADMAN GANGSTA is the soundtrack. Teaming up with French-Congolese rapper Tiakola, the track pulls from Amerie’s “1 Thing” for its rhythm bed, but what they build over it is more than just a sample flip.
Asake raps and croons like he’s taking victory laps, blending Yoruba and pidgin with cheeky baritone flair. Tiakola’s French delivery slots in, adding texture like pepper in a sweet stew. From his feature on Davido’s ‘Blow My Mind‘ to his duet with Wizkid on ‘Call Me Every Day‘, Chris smoothly fuses the genre’s groove into his R&B sound. His love for the genre reflects Afrobeats’ ability to mesh effortlessly with other styles.

Beyond these hit tracks, Chris Brown has often expressed his admiration for African music and its artists, both on and off the stage. He has performed alongside Nigerian stars on several occasions, including Wizkid during his Made in Lagos tour, where they thrilled fans with their electrifying synergy. The video begins with a slow shift of the camera from Lagbaja playing his saxophone solo to a bustling train station with movement that appears to be in slow motion. On “Back n Forth,” Fireboy DML expresses reassurance of love to his lover, which Clarence brilliantly executed in the song video. 

Reassurances help to comfort the recipient, and in most cases, they have heard them before. The leading vixen sings along with Fireboy DML as they travel through the train station dressed in vintage clothing to witness a performance that also serves as Lagbaja’s verse. Clarence bites TG Omori’s crowd aesthetic and finely orchestrates a performance in the music video. Violinists dressed in Lagbaja’s mask and costume perform at the train station’s waiting area before moving on to accompany Lagbaja’s verse with choreography.

The second verse gets more grandiose, with Fireboy DML and his girlfriend clothed in Yoruba regalia, serenading each other as the theatre erupts completely. One remarkable thing about the video is briefly losing Lagbaja after performing his verse but realizing his presence is everywhere, symbolized by the vixens.

From the point of releasing his debut up until the release of his 2-pack single ‘Outside/Obaa Sima,’ Fireboy DML has experimented, tinkered, and evolved with his style of music. His recent release and fourth studio album, however, takes a similar approach as his first, which has been deemed one of his best, most finely executed albums. It appears Fireboy took to the criticisms and general feedback from fans and critics alike. On ‘Adedamola,’ Fireboy DML revisits a familiar past and allows himself to get submerged once more in the endearing world of desire, romance, success, and heartbreak. He does so with striking similarities to his debut but with a more masterful approach and execution, courtesy of his years of experience in the art.

‘Adedamola’ almost feels like a second instalment to his debut ‘LTG’, and the simple act of Fireboy retracing his way back to how he originally began suggests he’s possibly doomed to be a keeper of tales of love, which is certainly not a bad thing. The functional value that was missing and repelled most listeners on his third studio album ‘Playboy’ returns on ‘Adedamola’. And it’s evident in the difference in the reception of both albums. Not all artists are given the grace of experimentation, and it appears Fireboy is charged with the responsibility of catering to a specific audience. He accomplishes this duty on ‘Adedamola’ but not without questions as to why he ever had to walk away from what feels like his intuitive territory.

The album starts off with a powerful intro, ‘Iseoluwa,’ a song of musings and thanksgivings accompanied with the rich rhythm of the talking drum. It is immediately followed by a track of masculine yearning ‘Call Me‘, which features an “Afrolife” delivery style reminiscent of tracks like ‘Energy’ and ‘What If I Say‘ off his first album “LTG.”

One of the many beautiful things about Fireboy DML as an artist is his ability to musically walk listeners through a specific subject matter. It’s almost like listening to a friend tell a story, and this is what the third track ‘Ecstasy’ gives off. The appearance of the guest artist, Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, is utilised on the track, as he further charms the record with his solo play of the saxophone. Fireboy DML shows deftness and proves a great collaborator as he creates space for the guest artists to bring something special to the record. The aforementioned track and the song with Lojay “Letting Go” affirm this take. However, on “Back n Forth,” a great song could have been an even greater song if the iconic Lagbaja was allowed to record a longer verse. Notwithstanding, the unexpected pairing of both artists resulted in a chemistry that birthed a remarkably kinetic track.

“Hell and Back” is essentially an Afro-R&B creation that soundtracks Fireboy mentally and physically checking out of what must have been a toxic relationship. He clearly states he has no intention of returning to his love interest, even if it’s what they want: “Oh, now you want me back. After putting me through hell and back, I thought I told you that I’m done with that. So tell me, why do you want me back?”

‘Wande Coal’s Bop‘ is a track that evidently pays tribute to one of Nigeria’s greatest vocalists, who has inspired and continues to inspire a handful of the new generation of Afrobeats singers. From the production to the cadence and melody, listening to Fireboy’s imitation of Wande Coal is as entertaining as it is flattering. The aftertaste of Wande Coal after hearing Fireboy sing on ‘Wande Coal’s Bop’ lingers and reappears on “Yawa.” On the track, Fireboy DML sings about living an unbothered life regardless of the backbites and gossip, delivering his message with a more Wande Coal-esque melody. Imitation indeed is the sincerest form of flattery.

It’s beautiful to realise once again that a pacy production is familiar territory for Fireboy DML. It makes a listener think back to tracks like ‘Scatter,’ ‘Vibration,’ and ‘Omo Ologo’. On “Change Your Life,” Fireboy is persistent in winning the heart of a love subject.

The sequencing of the album peaks from ‘Wande Coal’s Bop’ to ‘Change Your Life’ to ‘Obaa Sima’ to ‘Need Me’, as they all feel like one long party experience. ‘Need Me’ is a more energetic sequel to ‘Obaa Sima’ and both paint a story of a whirlwind romance.

The album started with a powerful opening record, and it’s a plus to the experience if it finished on a similar note. ‘Jon’s interlude’ switching places with ‘Ready’ would have given the LP the finishing it deserves. But this doesn’t take anything away from the album’s cohesiveness, nor does it do major damage to the album’s sequencing. 

Fireboy DML has always had a working formula from when he was first introduced to listeners. It was the ability to tell relatable stories using well-penned yet regular lyrics on a properly engineered production in a way no other artist in the Afro-R&B scene does. He never lost his touch as an artist; as a matter of fact, Fireboy DML is perpetually talented. All he had to do as the niche artist that he is was to return to telling stories that resonated with listeners through his music. And it worked, ‘Adedamola’ has been widely accepted with open arms as some are boarding a ship that claims it is Fireboy’s most superior work till date and adamantly sailing away.

Two years after his third studio album, Fireboy DML released his fourth, eponymously named “Adedamola.” The star-studded album features Lagbaja, Lojay, Seun Kuti, Jon Batiste, and Spinall. Fireboy DML disproves naysayers by making a 14-track album of delicious, well-produced, sequenced music. Unlike Fireboy DML’s persona on his last studio album “Playboy,” “Adedamola” abandons that in favour of the “LTG” charisma and approach, which critics and fans think is his most natural state. From the execution to production and writing, “Adedamola” takes on a similar approach as “LTG,” an album acclaimed to be Fireboy DML’s finest. And consequently—if you haven’t heard it yet—it’s a sublime lover boy project that’s every bit as brilliant as his first.

Standout tracks: Iseoluwa, Letting Go, Back and Forth, Wande’s Bop, Change Your Life, and Yawa.

Harmonize – Better Go

Harmonize does it again with his new release. “You Better Go” is a heartbreak ballad clad in soulful melodies expressed in Swahili and is quite the infectious record. Angelique Kidjo – Joy ft. Davido

5X Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo teams up with one of Nigeria’s finest Davido to spread joy through music. With uplifting lyrics, ‘Joy’ sends a message of triumph over pain and that the result of a weathered stormy phase is usually joy. “I found my hope when it was lost/When it was lost I helped my heart out of the dark/ out of the dark I found the power.” Davido and Angelique Kidjo croon as they celebrate resilience and strength.

Ckay – Egwu Iji

The Ojà (flute)-dominated song marks the 4th song from Ckay in 2024. The flute (which sounds a little too similar to the one on Kcee’s smash hit “Ojapiano”) permeates the song, and the robust log drums give sparks to Ckay’s flattery lyrics. Egwu Eji underlines Ckay’s range as an artist and his ability to deliver on even experimental productions. 

Tobe Nwigwe – Hood Hymns

Tobe Nwigwe, an American rapper and singer of Nigerian heritage, featured a diverse range of artists on his most recent album, ‘Hood Hymns,’ including two Nigerian features. Odumodublvck departs from rapping on the album and is heard vocalising, while Afropop artist Adekunle Gold contributes his unique delivery. Tobe Nwigwe’s “Hood Hymns” combines hood themes and lyrics with gospel-inspired execution reminiscent of Kanye West’s “Jesus Is King” album.
