Taves Finds His Voice on “To Your Ears”, a Reflective Start to the Year

Taves Finds His Voice on “To Your Ears”, a Reflective Start to the Year as the laidback Afropop artist delivers a melodic rap single exploring fame, pressure and self-expression.

Emerging, laidback Afropop force, Taves, kicks off the year with a new single available exclusively on Audiomack and YouTube. Under Bnxn’s “To Your Ears Entertainment imprint, the new release titled “To Your Ears” officially launches Taves’ music year.

Taves first came into the spotlight when his cover of Bnxn’s “For Days” went viral, catching the attention of many—including Bnxn himself—through an uncanny similarity in musical delivery. Since then, he has been taken under Bnxn’s wing, steadily releasing new music while refining a familiar flair for melody, delivery, and lyrical phrasing.

On his new single “To Your Ears”, Taves is engrossed in a lyrical flow state that retains the melodies and cadence of a singer exploring rap. The production leans on a minimalist drum rhythm that forms a sturdy hip-hop foundation, creating a sonic ambience for Taves to get things off his chest. The record opens on soft guitar progressions and melodies, with Taves calmly rapping before the production eventually bursts into a fuller, more climactic moment.

Across the track, Taves delivers a sticky melodic rap with replay value that traps the listener in a loop. His lyrics reflect on the pressure of visibility, the weight of expectations, and the strange presence of enemies he has never met—when all he really wants to do is make music.

While it remains unclear who or what exactly is responsible for making Taves feel this way, a period of controversy comes to mind. In 2024, Taves had shared a tweet where he took a stand against misogyny—swearing off associations that degrade women—only to later collaborate on a track with an artist alleged to have been involved in sexual misconduct. Announcing “To Your Ears”, Taves captioned the snippet “taves you swore”, resurrecting the 2025 rhetoric from an X user.

Still, “To Your Ears” reinforces the idea that Taves is an artist figuring things out in real time. His identity, his boundaries, and the sound he wants to stand behind. The influence of Bnxn still hangs closely over his music, but moments like this suggest a performer with enough melodic instinct to carve his own lane. For now, the song sits comfortably as an earworm—one that signals both the promise and the growing pains of an artist still defining himself.
