From TV to the Oscars: Michael B. Jordan’s Career Highlights

You know of Smoke and Stack, but do you know Wallace?

Michael B. Jordan got his first major breakout as a teenager on The Wire, where his role as Wallace became one of the most memorable parts of the show. For a lot of actors, that kind of early moment usually sets the tone for instant success.

However, this wasn’t the case for Michael.

For a few years, his career slowed down, and he didn’t immediately transition into major leading roles.

Fast forward to 2015, he starred as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four, and it’s safe to say the movie wasn’t a fan favorite.

It didn’t just underperform; it was heavily criticised, but he didn’t stop there.

That same year, he appeared in Creed, and that film completely shifted things. His role as Adonis Creed marked a significant shift in his career, earning him widespread recognition and establishing him as a leading actor. The film’s success not only revived momentum but also positioned him in a new tier of actors capable of carrying major productions.

In 2018, he starred as Erik Killmonger in Black Panther. This time, the movie was a hit. He delivered a performance that sparked conversations and added to the film’s impact.

More recently, Michael showcased his range by playing two different characters, Smoke and Stack, in Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler.

One of the biggest criticisms actors get is that, no matter the role, you can still “see them”. Their mannerisms, their tone, their personality don’t fully disappear into the character.

However, playing two roles in one film tests that directly because it forces an actor to create clear differences between characters, switch personalities convincingly, and make the audience forget it’s the same person.

In short, it’s an immediate test of range.

When it’s done well, – like Michael definitely did- it shows a level of control that not every actor has.

It’s no surprise that his work in Sinners earned him his first Academy Award for Best Actor at the 98th Oscars, marking a major milestone in his already promising acting career.

One thing is certain: Michael B. Jordan remains one of the most charismatic heartthrobs on and off the screen.
